OK lets assume that Bush was wired and will be again. What if..
we could bust him? I have seen "The Amazing Randi" expose a fake psychic by catching his audio fed on tape. Why couldn't some enterprising electronics expert do the same for the Democrats?

I think there is only a limited number of choices for frequencies. Could something like a police scanner be used? Is it possible that the feed is not powerful enough to escape the building? If not could the Kerry campaign have someone with access do this surreptitiously?

All I have is a bunch of questions and no expertise and no real answers. I know there are bound to be DUers with tons of knowledge in this field though. Come on feel free to show off.
Thanks SRB

1. If true, the main signal would be encrypted
and the signal from the receiver to the earpiece very weak. Probably impossible to monitor unless you're right next to his ear, or in the same room as Rove.

4. I Agree About Encryption
but what about jamming or overriding the carrier frequency? This device probably operates at very low power output, so why couldn't a jamming signal be transmitted at the likely frequencies?

5. is it that easy to encrypt an audio signal?
There must be a limited number of such devices available. Could a person educated in this area make a rational guess as to which type of devise is being used and use another like it to decrypt it?

7. Probably
Depends on the system they are using. Need a good spectrum analyzer and a broad band amp to pick up a low wattage signal. If they're using spread spectrum its a harder deal. In that event, the trick will be to jam it without interfering with other, necessarily RF equipment.

3. I'd like to jam the real signal and trasmit a fake one. : )
"Mr. President, it's Karl. My voice is different because I just caught a cold. For the next answer I want you to pick your nose, then answer 'I am Lord Zarcon from the planet Cygnus X-1. I need some TP for my bunghole.' in falsetto, then quack twice like the AFLAC duck."

:D

But just imagine the panic when the puppet realizes the calm voice of the puppetmaster has been replaced by .... static ...

11. Remember the real puspose of the earbug!!!
It exists in the first place for the use of the Secret Service.

I wouldn't meddle with it if I could. But tapping it would be instructive.

15. Debate # 1..THE WHOLE VENUE WAS JAMMED
before * arrived..everything worked.. When * arrived..NOTHING WORKED.

same happened at the R convention..except that a secret service guiy actually asked a reported what frequency his cellphone was..and then everything was JAMMED..

GET IT????

THEY are the ones jamming every OTHER device so that NO ONE can HEAR or RECORD the transmissions..

The press is kept in a SEPARATE room where they watch the debates ON TV...no access to see the participants in person..

How did they transmit the debate if all signals were jammed?

19. Maybe that's what happened in the first debate
Junior had some very interesting expressions and twitches going on in that debate, some of which looked like he was startled. Most of them came about because he has no self-control and was acting like himself, but not all of them, IMO. Right after each one of those rather surprised looks, he'd glance into the audience, as if asking someone about something. That was my impression, anyway. I was sitting here with my kids, watching, and we kept asking each other if he was waiting for sign language or smoke signals to help him out. Lol! We never dreamed he was wired!

Check out the 'Faces of Frustration' video at http://www.dnc.org and see if some of his jerky movements and rapid eye blinks don't look like someone hearing -- or not hearing -- something the rest of us are. I think his signal was being blocked, periodically, maybe even inadvertently.
