"Big Ed" Schultz gaining stations in Liberal Talk Market!
CC Expanding Its Stable of Liberal Talk Formats

Katy Bachman

OCTOBER 04, 2004 -

The Progressive Talk format achieved another important milestone last week when KABL-AM, Clear Channel’s Nostalgia station in San Francisco, changed its call letters to KQKE and flipped to Progressive Talk as “The Quake.”The station, which features emerging left-of-center Talk personalities such as Ed Schultz (syndicated by Jones Radio Networks) and the Air America lineup, is the nation’s third Progressive Talk station in the top 10 markets. Others include WLIB-AM in New York and WHAT-AM in Philadelphia, both owned by Inner City Broadcasting. With the addition of KQKE, Air America will clear 32 stations, a third of which are owned by Clear Channel, syndicators of leading conservative Talk personalities Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck.

“Clearly there was a void,” said Amy Bolton, vp and general manager of News/Talk for JRN. “We’re going to end up with a Progressive Talk station in every radio market in America. It’s inevitable, no matter who wins the election,” Bolton predicted.
For Schultz, who is turning out to be the surprise breakout star of the new format, San Francisco marks his 55th affiliate, just two affiliates shy of the 57 Limbaugh had in his first year.

Schultz, who is considered more left-of-center than left-wing, proved the format could be a ratings performer on KPOJ-AM, Clear Channel’s Talk station in Portland, Ore., where he ranked first among adults 25-54 in his time period and the station jumped from No.26 to No. 3. In Miami, where Schultz has been on the air since July, he doubled the audience in one month.

“Schultz is the 600-pound gorilla of this format,” said Gabe Hobbs, vp of News/Talk/ Sports programming for CC. “Al Franken is a cume magnet and a big star, but he’s still learning how to do talk radio.” While Clear Channel is giving the new format a fighting chance, Hobbs warned that Progressive radio is still very much in its infancy.

4. She and Schultz have some sort of feud going on.
I can't recall the exact details, but I've heard Randi go off on Schultz once or twice. Frankly, I think it's nothing more than Schultz having bruised Randi's massive ego some time ago, and who knows? He may even have done it without meaning to.

7. No Way! Randi's humble humble ego bruised?
Impossible. After all, she is, self admittedly, the best.

8. Could it be that Ed Schultz isn't a pacifist?
He wants to increase the size of the military and I think Randi takes offense to that since Ed calls himself a true liberal. I think she believes he's in it for the money since Schultz was a Conservative who turned middle-of-the-road Democrat. Plus, since Ed Schultz's show is as popular, or more popular, in many markets that Randi is in, she probably doesn't like his word being spread over hers as the "liberal voice".

I have to agree with Randi on this one. Yeah she has a massive ego, but would you want a horse (what we call-middle of the road here in Florida) like Schultz representing the voice of our party or would you want a true ass (respectively) like Rhodes?

9. I'm not a "Pacifist" either, I protested against the Iraq Invasion, though
Many times. I will do it again. Pacifists are against all war...I and others are against "Pre-emptive strike" against sovereign nations because we want to exploit their people and resources.

There's a big difference.

2. ed is great
I listen to Ed, Tony Trupiano and Randi Rhodes from 3-6pm here in the Detroit. Tony has the strongest station so I call in to him often, Ed signal is good, Randi is on 1290 which comes in very weak from Ann Arbor

6. Heard Ed on Al - was great.
Troupiano comes off as an opportunist to me. He's an exploiter. He has Al Martin who is a known liar and exploiter. To me these two (troupiano and Martin) are like people who hawk UFO goods because they know there's a buck in it.

Troupiano is always hawking his weight loss drug.

but I do wish that some of our lib hosts would take a prozac before air time to mellow out. Some of them start talking too fast and yelling when they could better make their point by talking in normal tones and being conversational. Al Franken does a great job of this, and he is also multi-talented and fun to listen to. Mike Malloy (sp?) can rant and scream and get away with it. He does a great rant. :-)

Ed appears to be going directly after Rush's demo audience. He even talks sports every once in a while, just like druggie Rush. Even talks similar to fat boy druggie sometime with the whole stuttering thing (this I wish he would lose, it is annoying on fat boy and Ed both).

Great job Ed, keep up the good work. Kick fat boy's (slant head's) butt so bad that he has to go buy some more oxycontin to get over the depression.
