ISLAMABAD, Oct 11 (Reuters) - A militant tribesman in his twenties who says he leads a group that has threatened to kill one of two kidnapped Chinese engineers in Pakistan was among a group of 26 detainees released by the United States in March.

"Commander" Abdullah Mehsud had been held as a terrorist suspect at the U.S. military detention centre at Guantanamo Bay in 2001.

He arrived in Kabul in March with a group of 22 detainees after a Pentagon official announced, "They're no longer a threat to the United States. They have no intelligence value."

Yet after his release, the black-bearded militant, who wears a prosthesis on the lower part of his left leg, made his way to Pakistan's wild tribal region bordering Afghanistan where hundreds have died in battles between security forces and foreign and local al Qaeda-linked Islamic militants since March.

2. This looks like a major screw-up
and I would bet that the Bush admin has tried to bury the story. The Chinese must be royally pissed! Bush admin screwed up (as always) and now 2 Chinese might end up headless.

3. The Chinese can take care of themselves very well.
China is a much more realistic long term threat to the region than we are. However, one might want to know the methods used to determine that this man had no intelligence value. Put together with a certain bitterness over losing a bodypart, his internment may have caused him to become a far more dangerous enemy than when he began.

of what the circumstances of the loss might be ....

Goddess help us.

The article makes me think GITMO is a terrorist training camp.
What does that make the Departments of Defense and Justice (under the current mis-administration.)?

5. Has it crossed anyone's mind that the treatment this individual....
...was subjected to while a "detainee" radicalized him to the point of taking action against all enemies of the region?

It is highly likely, based on the results of the Gitmo operation to date, that this guy was an innocent person caught up in the general round-up of Al Qaeda "suspects".

6. It more than crossed my mind
If I was innocent and tortured for a couple of years and then released, I would have get even/take action high on my list of priorities.
