Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 09:41 AM by mindfulNJ
Well, in parting, do you have a special message for all those undecided voters out there?

Stone: Stay home.

Parker: Don't vote!

Stone: And it's no big deal. If you don't want to vote, you don't have to. Fuck that vote or die shit. I hate that.

These are the intelligent and insightful words of South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Could these little wet-behind-the-ears assholes BE anymore obnoxious? I know, I know...thats they're schtick...you don't have to tell me...I am a huge South Park fan, but this hardly the time that the youth of America needs to be hearing this message. Maybe they'll think differently when they suddenly find they're spoiled little behinds in Fallujah with an M16 in their hands. I will not be watching South Park again.

94. YAHOO ARTICLE: Stone and Parker admit film is not "ironic"
read this and weap, crap defenders:

"Both Stone and Parker seem to have it in for the Oscar winner. Parker told Variety last year when he announced plans to make Team America, "We hate those actors who take themselves so seriously and think they are a productive and important part of society. The subtle joke here is that all actors are puppets. This will probably piss off everyone in town--and might well be our swan song."

So, there is absolutely no irony here, this film is the POINT OF VIEW of Stone and Parker. They are freepers, basically, pathetically influenced by a pop culture meme (manufactured by the right wing, a point they don't seem to grasp) to deride actors.

To me, it sounds like they are envious of the actors they are deriding. Are they frustrated actors who turned to adolescent cartooning (teletubbies for the turd-obsessed) when they couldn't make it? What's up with their ire?

3. I think you're wrong here...

They spoke of UNDECIDED voters. Note that an undecided voter is UN-decided and not NOT-YET-KERRY-SIDED, so they are actually right.
If you don't know WHAT to vote... don't vote.. or vote empty...

plus I think it was meant ironically...

Personally I love the SouthPark and Simpsons series.
I specially love Simpsons because they often have very democratic or sarcastic views in it and still FOX has to air it because they simply cannot afford to loose the Simpson show because millions watch it.

That excuses so much, doesn't it?!

I remember a parody review of a performer whose show included killing an audience member. The fawning reviewer opined irritatedly: "Well, it was so obvious that he was being ironic..."

5. yeah...real ironic
Ultimately, I think we're both pretty optimistic people, too. A lot of this movie came out of, you're laughing at people because you're sort of saying, "Dude, relax." You have the Michael Moores of the world and all these people telling you, "These people are evil and America's going to be destroyed in a matter of five years!" And it's just, to us, not that dire. It's like, you know what? Our lives are pretty fucking great. And a lot of the lives we see around us are pretty fucking great, and everything's gonna be OK. That's just our basic philosophy.

Doesn't sound like irony to me.

We're in a fight for our country.

Giving these kids a free pass is not funny, not ironic, and not excusable.

No more South Park at our house. Fucking jerks. They don't realize HOW much of what they say speaks directly to these kids and their worldview.

I cannot believe they're being this blase'. I second the notion that they get drafted. Then they can do the Bill Mauldin thing and draw cartoons in the trenches when they've seen what it's like. Their lives won't be "pretty fucking great" if they're kidnapped and held hostage, waiting for a huge machete to saw through their necks.

30. I do agree with one thing they said...
If you are not informed at all, I don't think you should vote. I think it's disgraceful that people don't vote. I believe that everyone should become informed and vote, BUT... If you don't have any concept of what either candidate stands for by election day(though you must live in some kind of deprivation chamber not to have a clue), I think you are doing a disservice to all voters when you cast a 100% arbitrary ballot based on nothing but the candidates name, party, or picture. Anyone is capable of becoming informed on the issues, so it's not a matter of the "haves" vs. the "have-nots". If you don't vote, you are at least allowing informed voters to make the decision, if you cast a completely uninformed ballot, you may end up thwarting the will of the informed voters.

48. But who's to say who's "informed"?
You've heard the expression "Those who say, don't know. Those who know, don't say." My variation on that is "Those who think they know everything, don't know much. Those who know relatively much, realize they don't know everything." I think that probably describes typical progressives and right-wingers pretty well. People like these guys think they know everything when it's obviously they're not that well-informed and don't think things through very much. Meanwhile, many progressives who spend a lot of time researching the issues and trying to keep up on current events are a lot more cautious about thinking they have all the answers. And, then again, there are a lot of people on the bottom of the economic ladder who are not formally well-educated but "know the score", know that Bush is not on their side and that their lives are not going to be better as long as Bush is in office. They didn't have to read about it on DU. They're living it.

The thing that puzzles me the most about these guys is that a lot of their South Park satire makes me think they CAN be very insightful about some political and social issues when they want to be. And yet some of the humor is so stupid and juvenile and really, IMO, going for the "easy" laugh, like putting up a picture of Barbra Streisand on their Halloween episode... it really makes me wonder if one of them is more stupid but dominant and one of them actually has some brains and might "click" politically someday and start making sense.

54. My example was
that if you are basing your vote solely on the canidates name, party, or photograph, you are an uninformed voter. If someone wants to be a single-issue voter, that's fine. I personally think it's a bad idea, but at lease in theory a single-issue voter has done some investigation on that issue, and has decided that particular issue is worth voting for one canidate over another. Also, I don't necessarily have an issue with voting strictly on a canidates character (as in, "I don't know where either of the canidates stand on anything, but I think Kerry is a more honest person"). No one will every truly be an "informed" voter on every possible issue that a president may have to encounter, from Foreign policy, to Progeria research, to the elimination of the penny, but if your basis for voting has nothing to do with the canidates positions or character, and is based on something that has absolutely no bearing on a persons ability to be president (like the color of their tie, or selecting whoever is at the top of the ballot), then IMHO that is an uninformed vote.

Jesus, so two guys who made a career out of offending everyone in every way possible just said something you disagree with, and now they're right up there next to bush on people's shit list.

How bout everyone stop putting words into our (the collective voters under 29) mouths and instead understand that we make decisions like everyone else? That would be really nice.

And I think these guys suck ass. I think they DO have a message and that message has always been: APATHY.

If Parker and Stone want to sit on their couch and be apathetic, fine. But they use their art to push a message of apathy. And I think that's irresponsible and a waste of talent.

103. Can you really push a message of
Apathy? Based on the definition, I would think that someone who cares enough to listen to their message would care too much to be apathetic. At best, they will only convince people who are already apathetic to remain so, and I agree that it's not a good thing?

These guys are the pot smoking gay Republican wing of the GOP, they are marginalized and not very important to the GOP.

And now they just pissed off the rest of their audience too. I expect them to start back peddling from their last movie.

would actually vote for Kerry?! Anybody who would follow their recommendation are most likely the types that would vote for junior because he kicks ass. I think the one of the reasons our country is in such a fucked up state is because too many uninformed voters fill out their ballot according to what they hear on Rush, or see on the TV. I wish these uninformed, uncaring people WOULD stay home on the 2nd.

The word "genius" needs to stop being bandied about like a fucking hackeysack on a suburban Colorado lawn.

And Parker and Stone have done little to deserve their acclaim; their humor paradigm is the rich white kid making fun of the poor ethnics because they're dirty. Real classy shit. Satire only works when it's the powerless taking on the powerful; that's why Andrew Dice Clay and Sam Kinison WEREN'T funny.

I've always thought that these guys were assholes. They remind me of those kids in high school who decided that the best way to avoid being beat up by the jocks was to be seen making fun of the nerds.

Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 02:27 PM by RandomKoolzip
In this interview, they attack Michael Moore. In their new movie, they attack Michael Moore. Wasn't Trey Parker in "Bowling for Columbine?" Am I imagining that? Good way to pay off free publicity, fellas.

There might have been a time when the "South Park" style of humor might have been refreshing. I'm sure in the early 90's it would have been a breath of healthily irreverent air. But that time is over, the constant jousting at shibboleths is beyond tiresome at this point, and frankly, their targets get enough abuse at the hands of the powerful already. It's like making fun of the help at your mansion: hardy fucking har.

"Our lives are pretty great." That's wonderful: you're rich and famous. Most people aren't. Duh. If their lives are pretty great and there's no problems, why even bother with satire? Why not retire and raise hybrid beetles? The best humor is that which comes from righteous anger; think of Pryor, Hicks, Bruce, O'Donoghue, Carlin, Swift, Zappa....What's to laugh at when the enfranchised take on the disenfranchised?

offend the hyper-sensitive. They have ALWAYS been that way.

I grew up in CO...I'm the same age. My friend went to film school with them. He's hyper-sensitive. They did a student piece called "Alfred Packard: The Musical:". Alfred Packard is a Colorado legend from the 1800's...and the only man in US history to be convicted of CANNIBALISM!

My friend made this grainy...nude...sans sound...piece of crap. And the entire film school made the same kind of shyte.

All the Boulder hyper-sensitive got bent out of shape...when Trey and Matt's piece ended up not only getting the best grade in class...but spread through the entire town and became this sort of cult classic.

THEY ARE MAKING FUN OF YOU. WHY? BECAUSE YOU ACT LIKE THIS! LIKE BUSY-BODY LITTLE BITCHS!

I'm new to this board...but I've been reading it for months. I've seen a couple of people rip on these guys. I'M A LIB! AND PROUD! I ACTUALLY REGULARLY CANVAS FOR KERRY. BUT MAN...DOES IT GET OLD LISTENING TO WHINY LITTLE PEOPLE!

Get over it. Take their movies with a grain of salt. STOP BEING HYPER-SENSITIVE!

And guess what...if you're offended by my post...DING DING DING...YOU are hyper-sensitive. Rub some dirt on it and walk it off.

I'm of Irish lineage. Fucking limey bastards let us die in droves, didn't even send a tithe of food over, they sent soldiers instead. That mean I can't laugh when an englishmen makes a "drunken irish" joke?

Actually, fuck that, the damn CHRISTIANS came, killed all our priests, dropped their piece of shit religion on us, and stripped us of our good-vibe, earth-loving, tree-talkin' culture. And what do we get for it? St. Patrick's day, a day honoring the guy who killed off the native religion. So I can't laugh at a christian's joke about Druids, either, I guess.

Point to an ethnic group that has never been shit on. Go ahead, I'll wait. Pretty soon I won't be able to laugh at anything. Except Jewish jokes, 'cause they're used to it.

53. The Black Panthers were never the majority
Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 03:27 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
Women, hispanics who use the word "gringo" None of them are the majority and none of them shape our domestic policies. They don't set wages and they don't decide if our businesses and governments will "profile"
White males are and they do.

The Irish are no longer being oppressed. I'd like to see you laugh at an Irish joke at the time when they were.

The Irish pagans are no longer being oppressed. I'd like to see you laugh at a pagan joke at the time when they were.

Minorities and women are CURRENTLY being a oppressed. Now laugh at us.

61. I love this...sure...there is no Irish bashing going on....
Thats why they dedicated a day to us...and everybodies supposed to get drunk...and make fun of the Irish.

You think that doesn't bug the crap out of some of us?

People dress up in friggin' leprachaun outfits. Try to dance some stupid faux jig.

I wear my last name (very Irish) as a badge of honor. But I know that its cost me a couple of jobs. And when people hear my last name...a quarter of them have to ask me if I had a drink today. And then giggle. What kind of crap is that?

And I've seen South Park rip on the Irish. And I've seen them rip on Blacks...Hispanics...Jews...Canadians...Tree Huggers...Gun lovers...the Dutch...Hollywood...the Disabled...AND WASPS! I think they make fun of WASPS more than anybody. They constantly make the WASPS look like...ignorant, out of touch, new money trash. And they do it almost every show.

So...you just need to realize...these guys offend EVERYBODY! That is their goal. To offend as many people as possible. And you ARE offended...so they got to you.

Multiply that by about 100 and you might be in the realm of hispanic or black discrimination. And I'm Hispanic, it's not even been as bad on me as it has on the black population.

Sorry, but people telling Irish Jokes is nothing compared to what the black community went through during the civil rights movement and what they continue to go through now.

26. They claim to have grown up "below middle class"
Not sure whether that's true because one poster said one of them grew up a spoiled rich kid. It kind of dulls the point I was about to make if that's true, but I'll make it anyway:

If they did grow up poor or near-poor and were maybe a bit younger, they very well could have been sent to Iraq. They were talking in their Salon interview about how great their lives are and how optimistic they are and how it doesn't really matter who becomes president. I'm sure that's all true... For THEM. They completely ignore the fact that not every one has such a great life and that it makes a LOT of difference to many people who the president is. They ridicule liberal celebrities -- I guess it's incomprehensible to them that anyone would have money and still care about the people who don't. I guess they think the "I got mine. Screw you." approach is more noble, somehow.

You are so right. When I read that interview, the first thing going through my mind was: if you think the war is so great, why aren't you two signing up?

I'm really disappointed in the DUer's that are freaking out about these guys.

As I said...I may be new here...but I've been reading here for months. I grab links from you guys all the time for my regular board (Randi Rhodes MB in the hizzy).

But you people...need a friggin' vacation.

WE are the smart ones.

WE are the strong willed.

WE are the ones that appreciate humor.

But for some reason...you people have lost your friggin' minds.

I think if you're freaked out about these guys...you need to take a step back. Don't come to a board for a week. Do something else. Pick up your "other" hobby again.

Because in the last two weeks...we don't need people freaking out like this. I feel like I need to grab a frantic Shelly Winters and slap her to keep her from freaking out.

So...take a few days off. Get a hold of yourself...and then comeback...refreshed. And most importantly...FOCUSED! I don't want to have to talk people down when what we need is people mobilized. At that point...you take away from surge...and become a "boat anchor".

I'll match my creds up to yours on this campaign, or any other stretching back thirty plus years, and probably win hands down, so don't pull that "I'm doing so much for the campaign, therefore your opinion doesn't count" crap on me, OK.

That said, what Parker and Stone opined about may have been an attempt at humor, sarcasm, whatever, it still falls flat. In this day and age when OVER HALF of our eligble population doesn't vote, the last thing we need is a couple of semi-stars opining that voting isn't a big deal for public consumption. It is this type of mindset that is partially responsible for the mess we're in now, a democracy doesn't function well unless there is participation by ALL of the population. Instead of making the statement that they did, Parker and Stone should have told people that if they're uninformed and undecided that they should go out and inform themselves, and decide NOW, then go vote in November. Instead, they are simply attempting to hold the voter turnout down, which being the good Dem that you supposedly are, you should know works in favor of the 'Pugs.

That you continue to defend these statements made by these two people is really quite telling about yourself. Sadly, you don't come across well.

60. Ironically...
neither do you.

If they were saying the opposite...you'd call them sellouts.

What I find amazing...is that everybody's drawn this line in the sand. "WHICH SIDE ARE YOU?! YEA...NO...WHAT SIDE ARE YOU ON?!"

It has created an unbelievably charged year. Its a friggin' powder keg right now.

And I refuse to add fuel to the fire...at least on this ridiculously petty argument.

This reminds me of the one the Freepers are trying to use right now...the footage of Kerry walking down the steps calmly on 9-11. And they want to paint it as, "HE'S RUNNING! HE'S PUSHING LITTLE OLD LADIES OUT OF THE WAY! HE'S GNAWING ON A BABIES ARM! LOOK...HE'S STOPPING TO SELL CRACK TO ORPHANS!" It's people overeacting...and obviously I did as well...and I apologize.

But to freak out about two guys that have been offensive...since literally...the first day I heard their names...is just silly. These guys are "business as usual"...and they're in the business of saying and doing obnoxious, offensive, low taste things. They wore lavish evening gowns to the Oscars for Christ's sakes...got there hair and makeup done...the whole bit.

And they are about the only ones that are going a long with their lives as they normally do. If you're offended by their comments...then you never got it in the first place.

Oh..yea...and GO BRONCOS!

Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 05:03 PM by MadHound
It is the fact that they are promoting voter apathy. Hell, I may not like that they'd come out for Bush, but at least they would be making a political stand. Coming out for apathy just isn't in the interest of the country, like I said before, a democracy works best when all citizens participate in it . It may be cool, it may be hip, it may be the ultimate brilliant bad taste sense of ironic, sarcastic humor ever uttered, that geezers like me don't get. But that still doesn't excuse it from being a completely irresponsible stance to take in a critical election year.

64. The irony factor
Some of these people who rely soley on t.v. for thier news and entertainment, see Dennis Miller as a great intellect because he knows the english language,South Park as biting satire all the way down to Colin Quinn,Stern and the rest.We have other stuff to worry about, they don't worry because why should they ?Putting down celebritys doesn't help,it's fun and they need it,deserve it and all but they are running scared and don't have the guts to face the real problems and remain entertaing. We face a huge big bad machine here, but machines can break down. America has become the most entertained country in the world. The Discovery Channel used to show science, now it shows pimp mobiles for the rich & famous. Sorry about the preachyness of this rant,i feel desparate that this election may be the last chance we get. Watching t.v. has become like shooting up junk and it's brought to you by the people that import junk. So what do we do for entertainment ???? Hopefully in a few weeks things will change towards the better. If we win (please ) the work will really begin because the machine will become VERY ANGRY,the neocons are shitty winners, and if they loose ????? be prepared to work you ass off either way,but humans are pretty good in the long run.

Maybe thats why I "get" them. No..TV...a little more reality. Maybe those of your watching too much TV are the one's that don't get it...and its because you've had your brains numbed down.

Shut off the TV...read a book. Get your "5th grade" humor back...tell a scaticoligical joke once in a while. And start laughing at stuff again.

All of my friends are so excited about their new puppet movie but I get sick when I see the commercials.

They encourage and celebrate apathy. They're worse than freepers in some regards because their message has ALWAYS seemed to be 'Nothing matters. Don't have an opinion. Every side sucks.' How BORING.

Sure, I can still find South Park entertaining, but that doesn't mean I don't think they're helping instill apathy in young people.

92. Apathy
That seems to be the South Park message. They have some funny stuff but I think if there's a political message at all it's apathy.

I've read someplace that the South Park creators consider themselves libertarians - small-l type. There's the Libertarian Party but there are also some of the libertarian persuasion who don't believe in voting at all. Everything would be great if people would ignore politics and go on living their lives as they want. Their thinking, not mine.

Meanwhile the Bush Regime is dragging this country down the toilet. That kind of apathetic, leave-me-alone-and-don't-bother-me-with-politics thinking is part of the problem right now, unfortunately. If every one of the apathetic people would cast a vote for Kerry, even if to them it is just a protest vote, we would have a 50 state landslide.

97. This isn't even the quote that bothers me
This is:

"Ultimately, I think we're both pretty optimistic people, too. That's just our basic philosophy."

Now, there is no irony or satire in this statement. Just a stupid, myopic, I-got-mine-so-fuck-you, republican mentality.

You really can't defend that shit.

But I'm not wasting anymore time on these assholes.

I know I plan to vote, and I plan to encourage friends and family to vote as well.

I however am not the type of person to go forcing my opinions on others.

I do think people should vote, but I'm not going to go around telling people that they are assholes because they dont vote.

People have the right to free speech, they also have the right to remain silent.

People have the right to vote, however if they also have the right to not vote.

If they honestly have no opinion one way or the other, or just dont want anything to do with our democratic system thats entirely thier choice.

102. Like, grow up.
What kind of pathetic idiot takes south park commentary as serious debate fodder anyways?

These are the guys who decided that american indians (Cheif running-with-premise) should infect the people of south park with SARS by smearing asians on blankets...

It seems that most of the complainers here are poorly educated on political issues, and can't quite get the joke(s). If you can't laugh at yourself, that's a hint that the rest of the world is laughing *AT* you.

104. That's an inaccurate statement to ake
The Du-ers that have expressed distates with SP haven't even discussed political issues. How do you know whether they are not educated or not?
Secondly, I'm not a "pathetic idiot" and perhaps you should reacquaint yourself with the rules of the board since direct personal attacks are forbidden. I take offense. What they have said under the guise of "satire" is out and out racist.

105. Okay....
Nobody here in this thread is expressing political issues,

Of course, people who are well educated on the political issues may have a hard time laughing at themselves...

And "A modest proposal" is out and out racist against the Irish.

106. Jonathan Swift is Irish
The South Park creators are NOT Iraqis, minorities, gays, women etc.

107. Good to know that you have studied their genetics.
So, they have no mitochondrial DNA? How odd for a human to have no X chromosones.

Anyways, as an Irish, English, Polish, Scottish, D'neh, Ukranian, Austrian, German, Swedish, american, it's refereshing to be informed by someone so sanctimonious that I cannot possibly mock others, nor can Matt and Trey, because they are in no way connected to those that they mock.

Having seen Orgasmo, I think it's the best LDS comedy ever. Non LDS folks can't even understand their approach, in some ways.

108. Oh Brother...

You have no idea what you are talking about do you? This is the best you can come up with?

So let me get this straight...someone insults my race and I am offended and it's "Sanctimonious" because while insulting they put the title "satire" on it? They are cowards. I'd like to see them make these jokes to the face of some of the people they are offending. Whites making fun of blacks, hispanics and gays! Wow, that's so original! Hell, let's bring back blackface and Little Black Sambo! It's satire after all!

110. Okay, so, who would be acceptable to make fun of?
Nobody?

Is that your answer?

They make fun of white hunters, gay men, fat people, skinny people, the rich, the poor...

Should we not laugh at ourselves, or eachother?

Do you want me to dig and find every time you mocked a rethug?

I laugh at myself quite often... do you?

112. To make fun of someone for their beliefs or actions is one thing
A person chooses their beliefs and chooses their actions. To make fun of someone for something that is inherent to their person is another. Can I be too sensitive sometimes? Damn right. Tease me for that. But do we really have to reinforce negative stereotypes on things that cannot be helped? Race? Sexual preference? Sex?

I hear enough negative stereotypes aimed in my direction because of my race and sex from people in my everyday life. When a show uses those exact same stereotypes it's difficult to laugh. The same talking points I have seen people actually use against say...Hispanics, I have seen parroted on SP and it just isn't funny.

109. Its time to wake up, DUers
I have had South Park off since I first learned that these two are little freeperheads. Turn South Park off, and remember, as funny as it is, that these guys are RWers. Telling undecided people "Fuck that vote or die shit." Great. Wonder how many young people are thinking now, "The South Park guys said voting is uncool. Better not vote." Draft their asses and send them to the Middle East for a tour of duty and see what they have to say funny when they get back.

111. While I think....
... Southpark is sometimes pretty funny, I have no interest whatsoever is seeing a puppet movie of any kind. Screw that kiddie bullshit.

An adult just has to act like an adult sometimes. Matt and Trey will eventually learn this.

113. Enciting voter apathy, contributing to de-politcization of the electorate.
Congratulations to the South Park guys for a job well done.

Btw, it seems at least one of them is a libertarian.
