pedantic, but can't we try to do a little better than the freepers with the English language? Reading this thread (which was insanely contentious) just grated on me like fingernails on a chalkboard

Nobody can have "good principals" unless he or she is a supervisor of schools or some group of investors, bosses, etc.

Honesty, integrity, values and so forth are princiPLES.

And it's difficult to "loose" your "principals" unless they were restrained in some way, like mired in malapropisms...

Can we LOSE the improper use of PRINCIPAL, please? I realize the freeperss aren't all that educated, but let's do better.

/rant
;-)

edit: I see that I had one too many (not 'to many') ss (esses) in "freepers"...this damn keyboard has a bad S key, it repeatss when it issn't sssssupposed to. (exaggerated for effect) ;-)

8. LOL, you're on the button there. I have no problem with colloquial slang
in eyeball conversations, I use it myself, it just seemed to me it would reflect more positively on us if we can do a bit better conforming to reasonably accurate grammar and spelling here where there's an unknown lurking audience. That the plethora of vocabulary available to our variegated tongue is underutilized, distresses me. :D

2. Actually, the bottom line of this post is that I get to scratch someone's
name off my list. Wow, he made it 12 posts before getting "tombstoned" - way to go! I, of course, was being a lounge lizard and missed the whole damn thing *hitting spell check button now* :)

4. When our spelling is odd, it screws up Agent Mike.
Hi Agent Mike.

One of Agent Mike's jobs is to go thru and see if any mis-spellings are actually coded messages.

Agent Mike - does this say something?

6. So the effect you are looking for is to affect a change ?
Is that the principle?

7. then, than
I agree with that. If something is worth saying, it is worth saying correctly. I tend to ignore/tune-out poorly constructed posts. If the author doesn't care to make the post clear, I don't care to read it.

12. I'm so glad DU has a spell checker. When posting on my local
board I keep a window open at dictionary.com to check my spelling.

I am glad to say my spelling has improved almost immeasurably since I started this whole "forum posting" thing.

14. What bothers me is the use of foul language...
I don't have a problem with it personally but I am reluctant to recommend DU to my more conservative acquaintances because of it. This is a shame, as there is so much good information available here and the quality of discussion is also high.
