Second night Freeway blogging and We got Busted by the Cops!
Putting up a "Draft 2005/911 Bush Knew" Sign (it was 2 sided) on the major route thru town, when up pulls the car, lights flashing. Almost wet myself felt like when the cops would break up the parties in high school. Officer was really nice asked if I was OK. Said yes just putting up a sign, is that OK? He said yes, but what did it mean, so I told him the draft was coming back June, 2005, He said oh, and we left. Still got 5 signs up, but that was our last. After you get rousted by the cops, time to go home. Plan to continue doing this, does this mean I'm addicted to the rush.

26. Actually that's good advertising.
Kind of like the ad campaigns that start out just saying "It's Coming!"

If a person sees it and doesn't know what it's about, he'll ask someone else and voila! you've got two people talking about it.

5. Shoeempress, I meant to tell you...we are going out doing this tomorrow!
You have really inspired me, plus JohnyC posting that website...man, I haven't felt this motivated in AGES!

I am going to make the signs tomorrow, plus I need to go out and measure a couple of things to figure out the size bungee cords we need.

7. Good for you. It really is a lot of fun. I found using Chisel Tip
Sharpies is the best for hand lettering. Also noted that my "Where's Osama" Signs stay up the longest. Have fun and post what happens.

36. Tonight! Post-debate!
I'm kinda hesitant to post photos, though...a couple of the ones I'm planning on are kinda in a grey area as far as if I'm allowed.

I was gonna take pictures of them and send to www.freewayblogger.com, and just say I saw them somewhere :spank:

I got a sign up at an intersection which I've had my eye on for a while. Sign still there today, but knocked down. Will go late p.m. or early a.m to fix it.

8. Well the state I'm in is REALLY into politics, and signs are everywhere.
So I guess it can't be a major crime to put them up even if it is a podunk town.

10. I'm glad your State "is really into politics".
I'm in a small town in New York and there are a few "Support The Troops" yellow ribbon stickers but I haven't seen one b/c sign..and just a few Kerry signs..

It's the apathy that gets to me these days.

13. Minor Crime = "Civil Disobedience"
Hey, SO WHAT? That's democracy!

"Civil disobedience is not our problem. Our problem is civil obedience. Our problem is that numbers of people all over the world have obeyed the dictates of the leaders of their government and have gone to war, and millions have been killed because of this obedience. . . Our problem is that people are obedient all over the world in the face of poverty and starvation and stupidity, and war, and cruelty" : Howard Zinn

27. I think it is very TELLING
...that the cop was cool. Maybe he isn't too happy with weewee gutting the COPS Program or the fact that probably a good number of his coworkers were shipped to Iraq, requiring him to do double shifts and not get overtime for it.

21. Alternet Article on Freeway Blogger.

"The first signs I put up were after the election of 2000. I had been taught as a child that democracy is a place where you count the votes, and when I saw that was not going to happen, I felt cheated," he says in a phone interview.

"The reason I've done this is not because I'm consumed with a hatred of Bush or flaming with political passions," he points out. "The men who founded this country gave us the first amendment as a way of making sure that democracy stayed alive and vibrant. The reason they gave each of us the right to speak out was to sound the alarm if we felt our country or democracy was in danger."

Freeway Blogger is sounding that alarm by encouraging a nationwide sign-posting extravaganza called the "National Freeway Free Speech Day: Driving America to Think" on Oct. 13. The date coincides with the third and final presidential debate.

"I'm getting swamped with emails from people all over the country saying they're going to participate. I really believe there will be a thousand of us by the 13th." Through his website, he has garnered commitments from nearly 700 people to put up signs in 175 cities across 45 states. His web site advises that laws vary from state to state, and taunts, "But you'll have to catch us first."

25. You're my hero!
Great work for doing this, and even better to get away with it from the cop! In this foam-at-the-mouth RW state (VA), you'd be talking thru bars right now, but it's heartening to see there are still some spots in the US where it's OK to have a difference of opinion!

Stayed up til midnight making it. Up at 6 to go put it up on the overpass. Took pics but it wa too dark & they didn't turn out. Drove past at 8 AM on my way to work and it was still up and it's the last photo. The first one is me doing a Lynndie England impression, the second is my cousin and parter-in-crime.

Go for it, it's actually intoxicating. Watching the debate tonite, so I figure can really only do 1 sign, but I have the spot picked out and it's on the way to the debate watching party. Two birds with one stone.
