Don't leave the Country Move to a Blue State.
There are still Liberal Communities in the United States.
How about choosing one instead of moving to Canada?

I live in S.W. Minneapolis and it's quite liberal here.

What are some other cities a "Flee-per" could escape to?

7. Well, if you're a city-dweller...
Atlanta is cool. It's not like the rest of Georgia.

And our state just became red 2 years ago...no Republican governor during the 20th century, and only a couple of Senators.

Our state could use some rejuve.

Your freeway system is a mess and it is hotter then hell!! If I want to live in a hot state I can go back to Dallas/Ft Worth, which has a decent freeway system..No offense

I don't like Atlanta because rural life is for me- though Atlanta's fun to visit.

The hotter, the better...I can't move to Canada because I would get too cold. Maybe Mexico.

except that we are kind of tired of all these out-of-staters who just drive up property values.

Kentucky, West Virginia, and Tennessee are not bad places either. How about Ashville, NC, rather progressive.

Maine and Vermont are certainly examples of an influx of immigrants moving a state to a more progressive viewpoint.

well where I live is. Every other house had a Kerry-Edwards sign and the city is very Dem. Plus everyone I know is liberal. I was teasing a rep saying "I don't know any women Reps. at least not any anti-choice ones!"

And houses are relatively cheap here!

and hopefully we will remain a blue state!

there have been countless Posts about leaving the country.
Some DU'ers are looking for refuge. I'm assuming they may live in Red States and want flee.

I plan to stay put.

8. Moving back to the New England area next summer.
I can't wait. It will be so good to get out of Florida. I prefer to be close to my real home (Maine). We'll probably be in Connecticut, maybe 6 hour drive to my hometown, so it won't be so bad. I'm not going to intentionally move to a "red state" just to dilute the population with dems. That's not a good enough reason for me to live in one of those places.

12. move to a white state
or sometimes they're yellow depending on who is making the map. Or at least a pink or light blue state. Move to a swing state and you're vote might actually change an election, and it will be much more livable than being in a solid red state.

Although if Bush says appointed to office, I'm not too sure we'll actually have a real election again and we'll need some countries to keep us in check and not appease our dictator.

43. You can always move to a blue portion of a red state.
There are places here in my maroon state (Florida) that I wouldn't be able to tolerate living in. The county I live in, however, gave Gore more votes than any other county in the state, has the highest # of registered Democrats in the state, and has the highest ration of Dems to Repubs of any county in the state.

A lot of acreage in Florida feels like a foreign country to me...and many residents of those areas feel the same way, only in reverse.

I am in Colorado now and loving it. Much better then TX although I haven't seen any hot women yet..It was a tough choice between CO, AR(I have no cousin there to marry so this one is out) and MO. All of these were favorites, and now that I have settled for awhile in all of them I think I will stay in CO..I also like WY, OR and CA, but WY is too small, and OR and Ca are too expensive!

I'm in OK at the moment, but I used to be the Data Processing Coordination for Fogler Library at UMaine Orono, working on Mariner, URSUS, etc. I loved living in Bangor. I'll probably be moving to Waterville or Augusta when we go back though, to be closer to the VA Hospital.

Edit: for clarification on the Mariner & URSUS bit:

32. Bangor and Waterville are great towns too.
I have a preference for that area area of Maine because I grew up there. My home town is Newport, about 30 miles north of Waterville and 30 miles south of Bangor. Those were the two towns we went to if we ever wanted to see a movie, go out to eat, go shopping, etc., because there really isn't all that much to do in Newport. Both my husband and I are UMaine grads, so we've spent a lot of time in Old Town and Orono too.

If I can leave the country and find work, I would never meet the income minimum required for overseas citizens to pay US Income Tax.

Edited on Wed Oct-13-04 11:41 AM by babyreblin
My mom grew up in Red Wing, MN, right on the Mississippi River in southern Minnesota. My Grandma still lives there as do several of my aunts, uncles, and cousins. Red Wing is a wonderful community. The people are so friendly there. I had a lot of good times there when I went to visit. Whenever there was a community event, like River City Days, there was always a huge turn out. I could tell that the people there really took pride in their town. The public schools seemed to be really good in Red Wing too. I don't know if they still are. I haven't been there in ten years, so maybe things have changed, but I doubt it.

The only thing weird about the place was that a lot of the people regularly attended church. I'm not really used to that because people in my home town weren't big on attending church on a regular basis. Maybe a lot of towns in New England are like that.

28. My own jab in the dark
What would happen if the country did separate itself into enclaves of liberals and conservatives? Would we not be one step away from simply breaking up the country? Would that be a good thing or a bad thing in the long run? We could have a liberal country in the northeast stretching from Massachusetts to around the Great Lakes. Then there would be another on the west coast. The rest of the country would be left behind to everybody else.

40. Metro Detroit-Ann Arbor
Ann Arbor is totally liberal, but very expensive to live in. They have a nice decriminalization of marijuna policy, too-possession of under an oz, if you are caught by the AA police (state police enforce state law), is confiscation of the drugs and a $45 ticket. No criminal record results from it.

The Detroit area is pretty liberal. Royal Oak, Berkely, Hunington Woods, Ferndale, etc., are all hip and expensive communities. I live in south Warren, which is close to all the hip places, but far more affordable. Plus, although Warren has a reputation for being segregated and conservative, my neighborhood is about 70% white and 30% black, which is pretty good by suburban standards.

If you have no school-aged children and want to contribute to a city that needs more residents, there is always Detroit. If you like to buy cheap abandoned houses and fix them up, Detroit is your place. There are some architectural beauties crumbling away. Plus, with all the vacant lots, you could buy a house and adjacent lots, and have a large yard in the middle of the city. There are also some very nice neighborhoods in the city, if you can afford them. Palmer Woods has mansions, nearby University district and Sherwood Forest have large and beautiful homes, as does Rosedale Park on the west side. Crime in Detroit is over-reported. Most of it is domestic, like the recent day care killing. I lived in the McNichols/Woodward area for 12 years and was never once victimized in a crime.

Hamtrammk is the place to live if you speak polish, like cutting edge music and theater, or like good restaurants. It is filled with cute little houses, too, and has a beautiful old catholic church as an anchor (St. Florian's). It's not just a polish neighborhood anymore-there are people from all over the world living there. Muslims, Bangledeshis, Ukranians, etc. The only problem is that their schools suck even more than Detroit's.
