While we piss and moan about a statue of the 10 commandments...
and two words in the pledge of allegiance, Republicans are using these nit-picky campaigns as more ammo to convince the public that the Republican party is the only party for those of faith.

When half of us are drafted and the other half are making minimum wage at Walmart, I'm sure it will all be worth it to not have that damn statue in the front lawn of a courthouse you've never seen.

Discuss.

1. exactly right
let's just forget about the constitution and the separation of church and state

let the Christian right run things--who cares about anyone else's beliefs

7. Well you have to decide what you really want
And you have to decide the effectiveness of your actions.

I mean it's fair to question whether or not getting "Under God" out of the pledge should be a priority now.

On the other hand people are going to do what they are going to do; people who think this is important are probably going to fight for it anyway. Look at Nader; I'm sure he thinks he's doing the right thing (in fact I know he does because he says it constantly).

3. so your position is that
if Republicans make a lame argument on a subject, we should just submit?

Bullshit.

13. My position is that we need to pick our battles.
There are things far more pressing than statues.

4. At some point you have to take a stand.
This is the time. They can shove that statue up their asses; all 5 tons of it.

5. I think you have us confused with the other side ....
they're the ones "pissing and moaning" about the 10 Comandments. Our side won the debate. Maybe you're tired, and pulled up the wrong site. This is the Democratic Underground, the conscience of the nation.

6. I Never Complained About Any Statue!
I complained about an officer of the court failing to uphold the law, which is EXACTLY what he is paid to do.

These idiots are the ones who like to talk about "rule of law", but when Roy Moore decided he didn't like the law, he violated it. People who want law and order, and accuse others of wanting laws on a smorgasbord, they should be the last people who encourage judicial activism.

Yet, there it was. HE is a lawbreaker. HE wiped his feet on the Constitution. My complaint is with paid public officials failing to do their sworn duty.

If they want to spin that some other way, and suggest it's because i want to moan about the 10 commandments, there's nothing i could do about that. They're going to find some way to disagree, because they are disagreeable people.

I'm in the right. I'm not backing down to troglodytic behavior.

8. Who do you mean by "we?"
I am not aware of any prominent Democratic elected official trying to get the X Commandments or "Under God" out. Private citizens and the ACLU have made the most noise about these things.

I agree that we need to pick our battles and right now this issue has low priority. I am afraid, however, that the wingers will continue to push religious fundamentalism down our throats if we allow them to get away with it.

9. Commandments that tell those of minority faiths that their gods are trash
are not a small issue in a pluralistic society, sorry. Those commandments belong in church, not pushed by the state.

I can always tell when somebody hasn't bothered to read all ten commandments since he was a child. He thinks they apply to everybody.

If you were a Hindu and you saw that first commandment outside a courtrooom, would you expect justice?

Not a chance.

10. What are Jewish people saying about this?
The Ten Commandments originated from the Jewish people. The God refered to in the 1st Commandment is their God. Do Muslims also ascribe to these commandments? All other religions &/or philosophies that are not Judeo/Christian should be subjected to that first commandment? Christians now seem to feel that this is a Christian issue.

It is a seperation of state and religion issue.

The 1st Commandmnent does not apply to all Americans.

16. Emblematic of the larger issue
Which is how the Shiite Christians (a.k.a., the ones who currently have the political power across the U.S.) are pushing their beliefs further into the public sphere.

Thank you for that hypothetical about the Hindus, Warpy. It's an incredibly valid point. One of my best friends was raised a UU in rural Appalachia and had TEACHERS regularly tell her she was going to hell.

But I will gladly piss *on* the statue when I see it...

17. The right response is "Which version of the 10 Commandments?"
There's three different versions. The version propounded by Catholics is significantly different than the one Protestants and Jews use, but there are differences between the Jewish and Protestant versions, too. So ask "10C" statue supporters which version they prefer. If they say "all of them" or "whichever version the statue-placer prefers" then ask them if they'll also accept a statue of "The Pagan Rede" or a similar injunction out of the Qu'ran.

Eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfill,
An' in it harm none, do what ye will

18. what democratic candidate has made this an issue?
excuse me, but if I remember correctly, the repukes use this issue every chance they get in order to get the foaming-at-the-mouth idiots who cannot understand the concept of separation of church and state to the polls.

it's an embarrassment, really.

it matters to Americans, as well it should, because who wants anti-intellectual dogma to guide the laws of this land, rather than the Enlightenment philosophy that humans can create good government?

Secular reasoning, not superstition, is what made the American Revolution possible.

We should show the 10 commandments in public even though doing so is a violation of the commandment against graven images? Weird.

:boring:
