Or, WHEN A "UNIQUE THREAT" IS REALLY A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY
I just got it. Just had one of those Edith Bunker brain stall outs and then exhaled "oo-oo-oo-OH-OHH." I haven't been approaching the Iraq War rationales from the right direction. Thanks to Dick Cheney, now it all makes sense.
The Bush Administration invaded Iraq not because they knew Hussein had weapons of mass destruction but because they knew Hussein didn't have weapons of mass destruction.
The Bush Administration invaded Iraq not because they knew Hussein was a "gathering threat" but because they knew Hussein was a weakening threat.
The Bush Administration invaded Iraq not because knew they Uday and Qusay were going to successfully manage the family business after Pops retired but because they knew No. 1 and No. 2 sons were not going to successfully manage the family business after Pops retired.
The Bush Administration invaded Iraq not because they knew the sanctions were not working but because they knew the sanctions were working all too well -- at least according to the complaints of several Bush-friendly American corporations, including the ubiquitous Halliburton.
The Bush Administration invaded Iraq using the Rumsfeld fast-and-cheap strategy* not because they knew the Rumsfeld fast-and-cheap strategy would succeed but because they knew the Rumsfeld fast-and-cheap strategy would not succeed.**
The Bush Administration invaded Iraq not because they knew that "9/11 changed everything" but because they knew that 9/11 gave them a giant permission slip, but for a limited time only.
Here was Dick Cheney's inspiring quote: Cheney dismissed the significance of the Duelfer's report central findings (ie, no WMDs), saying, "We already knew that."
I just bet the bastards did.
* "Cheap" here applies only to human lives, not dollars spent.
** The last thing the Bush Administration wanted in Iraq was to get in and get out fast. From the Bush Administration viewpoint, the longer the US is in Iraq, the better. The longer we're hanging around those oil fields, the better.
