Someone reassure me about my donation to the DNC |
|
I just got a call from the DNC. Both my husband and I have contributed pretty regularly for the past few months, so I was not surprised that they had our name. They asked for more money and I gave it. I am in such a good mood today after the debate, I was not thinking clearly. And I broke a cardinal rule of mine : Never give your credit card number out over the phone to someone who calls me ! What the hell was I thinking? Now I am sitting here in total paranoia, thinking I could have given to the republicans for all I know.
The caller ID says OUTREACH ASTS. I called the number and got a recording saying they were an organization that makes phone calls for non profit fund raisers. Can someone please tell me they have received a similar call and it is on the up and up?

1. Well I haven't received a similar call but... |

... last year I worked as a telemarketer for the University of Illinois' fundraising department, and our job was to solicit donation over the phone, preferably via credit card. We didn't keep card numbers on file or anything - just used them for the transaction at hand. If they said they were with the DNC, they were. Tons of not for profit organizations solicit over the phone. I myself donated over the phone to Amnesty International once. I am absolutely sure you have nothing to worry about.

You are right. You should never give any sensitive info over the phone to someone who called you. If you call someone, say a mortgage company or what not, then you're pretty much alright. But if they call you, they could be anybody. Rethugs, maybe. Or maybe just a couple of con men in a basement somewhere in New Jersey.
I'd say the chances are slim, but you might want to run the OUTREACH ASTS group by the Better Business Bureau, just for some peace of mind.
