Is there a resource that would let you find locals who got tax breaks for SUVs(particularly if they break down for Hummers and other vehicles)? Is there a resource that gives the total amount of money tax payers have had to pay that went to buying hummers for rich assholes who have no actual business need for such a vehicle?

8. You could have at least capitalized "Hummers".
Then, you might have gotten a few less jokey responses.

Or maybe not.

To answer your question - no, I don't think that that type of information is publicly available, though I could be wrong.

Defining "business need" would be a difficult task. Many home-based businesses aren't apparent to the public at large and sometimes not even apparent to neighbors.

9. Doesn't really desever capitolization, but
Well, considering the intent behind the tax credit was so that farmers could get tax credit for their heavy equipment, I would tend to think that people that aren't farmers are fairly likely to not need a tax break for buying a Hummer. Being able to track it to the local level would be cool. If all of us could "out" a few locals for abusing the tax system to get a cheap gas guzzling terrorist funder, it could make those vehicles very unattrative very quickly. Those things don't even seem like they would be practical for the type of work that would require a heavy duty vehicle. I don't see them being as useful as a pickup truck to someone that actually does manual labor of any kind.

It seems like somehow this information would be available to the public, although likely not in a format that would be filtered or useful.

On Jan. 9, 2003, Bush allowed the 6,000-pound SUVs to benefit from a large tax break. The amount small business owners can deduct from their taxes when purchasing an SUV. The tax deduction increased from $25,000 to $75,000.

With this increase, the entire cost of vehicles such as the 2003 Hummer H2 could be written off in one year. This encourages businesses to purchase SUVs rather than passenger cars, which are not eligible for the deduction. Hummers get 10 mpg. Other vehicles targeted by the tax break, such as the Lincoln Navigator, get 12 mpg, according to the Fuel Economy Guide of 2002.

Didn't anyone wonder why you were seeing SO MANY Hummer commercials?

11. The DMV keeps registration
information. As long as you aren't asking about a particular person, you can ask them for stats on how many hummers for example are registered in a particular state. This is public info (tax payers $$$ support the DMV) but you may have to struggle to get the info.

There is no way of knowing from this data alone which owners (if any) got tax breaks--but if the number of hew hummers registered spikely dramatically in the last year--well that would be an interesting indicator that people are buying them for some reason right? You could extrapolate that into saying that perhaps some of these new buyers used a tax write-off. (I doubt you will get tax info on anyone--IRS is not very open about these things) Good luck!
