"Government run Healthcare.... |
|
...leads to poor Healthcare!---gw bush* 10/13/04
Doesn't the VA qualify as Government Run Healthcare? bush* praised the VA later in the debates.
I am under the impression that until the republicans took over, the VA provided some of the best healthcare available, but I don't know this from personal experience.
Can any VETS comment?

1. Universal healthcare is NOT "Government Run" -- just government paid. |
|
Again, they're spreading falsehoods with distortions. Like, that really surprises me....... :) Try reading this for more about Universal health care: http://kucinich.us/issues/universalhealth.phpKanary

2. Also, CHAMPUS, Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIF. |
|
All are Government run healthcare. There was a study on the Physicians for a National Health Plan that claimed that 60% of health care was offered through government programs, most prominent of these being the VA and the military. If I have time I'll try to dig it up.

3. The VA hasn't provided the "best" care in a long time. See the |
|
movie "Born on the Fourth of July" staring Tom Cruise.
The US is the only industrialize nation in the world that doesn't have governmnet health care. Everyone else seems to be OK with it.
The US is the best health care - for those with money. But for those who aren't rich, it's a mess. And for those without health insurance, it's a disaster.

5. Two positive experiences, one negative |

My father is a Vietnam vet with Agent Orange Exposure and situational psychosis comorbid with Narcissistic Personality Disorder and a few other mental health issues that went unacknowledged until after he came back from Vietnam. (Nonetheless, the Navy kpet him for another 16 years...)
The VA has been very good about keeping him in medication and getting him therapists when he agrees to see them or when he is forced to see them (after each of his divorces...) Their therapists have usually been charmed by him, however, until the rest of the family comes in and gives them the real lowdown. (Dad's a charmer. That's part of the reason he's so difficult.) But the care is good.
My best friend's father was also a vet, and when he was diagnosed with Chrondrosarcoma, his insurance company would not have covered most of his care. Again, the VA stepped in and did a wonderful job, covering everything including inhome care and medications. Unlike my mother, my friend's mother was not left impoverished by her husband's final illness. They both praise the VA to the skies for the quality of care they received with him.
HOWEVER, my friend herself, also a vet (Marine) has had a hell of a time getting care while she's worked menial jobs without coverage. She's young, female and not homeless, so she's at the bottom of the priority list, unfortunately. She's had a hell of a time getting some endocrinological issues worked out, which are her major issue.
The DH and I have not had to use VA directly, and probably won't unless pressed. There are others who need the care more than we do.

6. If Shrubbie hates 'government health care' so much-- |
|
--why doesn't he give up his own government health care?
