I Need Some Help Fast (www.oreilly-sucks.com)

Ever since the O'Reilly sexual harassment story hit the news my web site hits have exploded. Yesterday I had 9000 unique hits, I normally get 9000 hits in 10 days. So far today in 8 hours I have 7200 unique hits, that is almost 1000 hits an hour.

http://www.oreilly-sucks.com

Basically I have used an entire month worth of bandwidth in 2 days, so I need to raise some money fast to buy more bandwidth. I have already removed most of the web site to try to at least keep the index page online. And I am sending people to my message board, it is on a different server so it does not use my bandwidth.

If you can make a donation I sure can use it.

My paypal donation page is here, but it may go offline if I run out of bandwidth.

I have set up a back up donation page at another server, in case the above page goes offline.

Thank You,

Steve

1. Have you ever thought about going the blog route?
Edited on Fri Oct-15-04 08:47 AM by RatTerrier
I just set up a blog through these guys:

http://www.blogger.com/

They're the same ones that handle some heavy traffic sites like Kos and Atrios. No bandwidth limits. They're built for heavy traffic, and they even allow you to put your own revenue-generating advertising there.

You may have to adjust the layout of your site, though, but I believe you can use your domain name and redirect it to a Blogspot site.

Oh, did I mention it's all free?

2. Impossible...........

Sounds good, but it's not possible. I have spent 3 years getting the site known, my url is in the google search engine and many other search engines. I have 30 or 40 people who link to my site at my current url, it would take a week to contact them all and change everything.

Switching my site to a blog is just not an option.

3. Use the existing URL as a redirect

No name changes necessary. You can keep your URL (which is a good one) and use it as a redirect, or configure it to a blog. Daily Kos does this.

Only thing you'd have to do is rewrite or convert some of the HTML.

4. I took a look at your site via Google cache
http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:CjHaeYcqwwoJ:www.oreilly-sucks.com/+&hl=en

Haven't seen it in a while. Looks good, and it's easy on the bandwidth-eating graphics (a definite plus). This could really translate well to a blog-style setup.

All you have to do is set it up via Blogger, give it a name like "Oreilly-sucks", so it shows up as oreilly-sucks.blogspot.com. BUT, you won't be using this name. Simply use your current URL as a redirect to the blog. Meanwhile, you can keep much of the same basic layout (with a little HTML tweaking, which Blogger totally allows) and just a little reorganization. And Blogger runs on Google's servers, meaning fast speeds and no bandwidth limits. And it's all free, meaning no sweating about eating up your bandwidth.

Besides, with a blog, you can update easily. I'm not trying to pimp Blogger, but I'm very pleased with it. I have another site (non-blog) that runs on a slow-ass server that I'm going to migrate over there. I think it would be perfect for your site. And, did I mention that you can keep your domain name?

5. Rat........

Thanks Rat, I will look into it.

For now I removed most of my web site and just left a message sending people to the message board. All this has hit me so fast my head is spinning, I will have to think about my options and decide what to do.

I do not like the blog idea, but I will think about it. If I can raise $96 I can upgrade to the 20GB a month web hosting plan for a year. It's $7.95 a month, but you have to pay for 12 months at a time. that would be the fastest way for me to get the full web site back online, and it will set me up for a year.

7. Update.........

I just wanted to say thank you to the people who made a donation to me. I have recieved three $10 donations so far, that is not enough to get the bandwidth I need though.

I need a minimum of $54 to get the next bandwidth upgrade.

Thanks,

Stewert

9. Update #2............

Well folks it's been pretty wild since the O'Reilly sexual harassment charges hit the news. I had 9,000 unique hits on thursday, and 18,293 hits on friday. So far this week I have 36,965 hits, and I have 47,141 hits so far in October.

In the last 2 days I had 33,000 unique hits, that is a lot, lol. In september I had 23,000 hits for the entire month.

So far today I have 6,800 hits, I am averaging about 1000 hits an hour and it does not seem to be slowing down much. That is what I used to average for 24 hours, I was getting about 1000 hits a day, now I am getting 1000 hits an hour.

It looks like people are finding my web site with google searches, they search O'Reilly and sexual harassment and it brings up my web site listing.

Hopefully within the next day or so I will be able to get the full web site back online.
