Rove Testifies in CIA Leak Investigation

CURT ANDERSON
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - President Bush's top political adviser, Karl Rove, testified Friday before a federal grand jury trying to determine who leaked the name of an undercover CIA officer.

Rove spent more than two hours testifying before the panel, according to an administration official who spoke only on condition of anonymity because such proceedings are secret.

Rove has been interviewed at least once previously by investigators in the leak case, as have Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell and other senior administration officials.

White House spokesman Trent Duffy referred questions to the Justice Department.

The special prosecutor in the case, U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald of Chicago, declined comment through a spokesman.

3. OK, now we'll get to the bottom of this!
I'm sure Rove cracked under the intense pressure, started bawling like a baby, and coughed up the whole story.

13. What do you make of this?
"...set off in a-non descript bronze colored midsize car. Rove was escorted out of the courthouse by two US Marshals and an unidentified man. Rove sat in the back seat of the car..."

22. Well For One Thing
We know that Rove was supposedly "turned" some time toward the end of last year, so the Marshall escort may play into that. I can't see why it would be protection even if he's blabbing, so possibly, if he made a deal, it could be something like his being in their custody as their witness for the hearing. Mind you this is conjecture on my part. The unidentified man I would guess to be either his lawyer or the prosecutor who prepped him. What do you think?

DNC Chairman Calls on Bush to Ask for Full and Public Disclosure

WASHINGTON, DC – Responding to breaking news today that Bush Senior Advisor Karl Rove spent over two hours testifying before the grand jury investigating the CIA leak which revealed Valerie Plame's name while she was an undercover agent, Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Terry McAuliffe released this statement.

"Two and a half hours is a long time to spend in front of a federal grand jury – a lot of information must have been shared," said McAuliffe. "Karl Rove needs to come clean and tell us what he told the grand jury today, and the President should show some leadership by making sure Karl Rove does just that. There are important questions about this criminal investigation that the White House needs to stop ducking and start answering.

"Tell us who is responsible for leaking Valerie Plame's identity. This is a serious matter; the person from the Bush White House who leaked this information is guilty of treason. This should have been resolved a long time ago. It needs to be resolved now. The American people deserve no less from their President."

Lockhart Statement on Rove Testifying in CIA Leak Case

WASHINGTON, Oct. 15 /U.S. Newswire/ -- In response to reports that Karl Rove testified before the grand jury investigating the CIA leak case, Kerry-Edwards campaign Senior Adviser Joe Lockhart issued the following statement:

"With two weeks to go before the election, the American people are still in the dark about how it is that their White House leaked the name of an undercover CIA operative to the press, jeopardizing the life of this agent and possibly violating federal law.

"Instead of hiding behind the lawyers he so often likes to criticize, George Bush should direct Karl Rove and anyone else involved to go to the White House briefing room and come clean about their role in this insidious act. If the president sincerely wanted to get to the bottom of this potential crime, he'd stop the White House foot dragging and fully cooperate with this investigation."

19. Because Ken Starr leaked the time and date of all their appearances
to the media.

Plus it is the media who is being investigated as well as the WH. They don't want to cover a story that exposes their own criminal behavior. It wouldn't be in their self-interest.

23. Bush guru Rove testifies in CIA leak probe
October 16, 2004

...

Rove spent more than two hours testifying before the panel, which White House spokesman Scott McClellan said showed that Rove was ''doing his part to cooperate'' in the probe, as ordered by Bush.

Rove's attorney, Robert Luskin, said prosecutors have assured Rove he is not a target of the criminal investigation.

''He appeared voluntarily today. He answered every question that was put to him,'' said Luskin, who added that he would provide no further details because prosecutors ''have advised us that public disclosure would interfere with the investigation.''

Before testifying, Rove was interviewed at least once by investigators probing the leak. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney have also been interviewed in their offices, with Secretary of State Colin Powell, White House counsel Alberto Gonzalez and McClellan among the administration officials appearing before the grand jury.

24. All DUers interested in joining
an effort to spread the word of this in the media are encouraged to read "Steel & Glass," the newest Plame Thread on GD. Although there are not going to be indictments and convictions before the election, this is a subject that the Bush administration is freaking out about, because the Kerry campaign and the DNC came out strongly on it yesterday.

To quote John Dean: "The known facts -- that the activities involved two (or more) senior officials -- indicate that there is evience of a criminal conspiracy. That criminal conspiracy is ongoing, and now involved with covering up the initial crime, thus creating secondary transgressions. (Sound familiar?) " (Worse Than Watergate; pgs 175-6)
