Bush Suffers Sprained Face at Debate
10/13/04 TEMPE, Arizona

President Bush left the campaign trail indefinitely tonight after suffering a severely sprained face while debating Democrat John Kerry at Arizona State University.

Bush spokesperson Karen Hughes told a hastily convened press conference that the president apparently sprained the lower portion of his face while simultaneously straining not to smirk and not to scowl.

"So many critics had commented on the president's facial expressions during the debates," Hughes explained. "He was bound and determined not to smirk or scowl tonight, and as a result, now he can't move a muscle in his face without excruciating pain."

Observers generally agreed that Kerry won the night convincingly, giving the Massachusetts senator a clean sweep of the three debates, due at least in part to the inability of Mr. Bush's face to conceal his true feelings towards his opponent.
