3. PLATOON DEFIES ORDERS IN IRAQ
Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 09:26 AM by Skinner
Here is the article in full (sorry mods):

PLATOON DEFIES ORDERS IN IRAQ
Miss. soldier calls home, cites safety concerns

By Jeremy Hudson The Clarion-Ledger (MS)

A 17-member Army Reserve platoon with troops from Jackson and around the Southeast deployed to Iraq is under arrest for refusing a "suicide mission" to deliver fuel, the troops' relatives said Thursday. The soldiers refused an order on Wednesday to go to Taji, Iraq --north of Baghdad--because their vehicles were considered "deadlined" or extremely unsafe, said Patricia McCook of Jackson, wife of Sgt. Larry O. McCook.

Sgt. McCook, a deputy at the Hinds County Detention Center, and the 16 other members of the 343rd Quartermaster Company from Rock Hill, S.C., were read their rights and moved from the military barracks into tents, Patricia McCook said her husband told her during a panicked phone call about 5 a.m. Thursday. The platoon could be charged with the willful disobeying of orders, punishable by dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of pay and up to five years confinement, said military law expert Mark Stevens, an associate professor of justice studies at Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, N.C.

No military officials were able to confirm or deny the detainment of the platoon Thursday.

U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson said he plans to submit a congressional inquiry today on behalf of the Mississippi soldiers to launch an investigation into whether they are being treated improperly. "I would not want any member of the military to be put in a dangerous situation ill-equipped," said Thompson, who was contacted by families. "I have had similar complaints from military families about vehicles that weren't armor-plated, or bullet-proof vests that are outdated. It concerns me because we made over $150 billion in funds available to equip our forces in Iraq.

Too bad we have the tabloid news - Mary Cheney and Bill O'Reilly cluttering up the airwaves.

Too bad we live in a media fairyland.

WITHOUT enough BULLETS???

And RIFLES?

And a whole buncha other such little non-essentials?

And that our troops are running out of ammo RIGHT NOW?

If freeper doesn't believe the above, I can dig up links for them, too.

bush = GROSS CRIMINAL NEGLIGENCE and INCOMPETANCE at BEST.

Just sent the link and he's all "Well, this is just isolated and does not show morale issues."

This really should be the number one story on the news tonight. If not, then the media is not covering Iraq properly. When was the last time anything like this happened? Vietnam

24. He wants to know about troop MORALE???
Tell him to read the US Army Times; they did a huge survey on it and found OVER HALF the troops said morale was VERY LOW.

Over HALF the troops said they WILL NOT re-enlist.

Morale in Iraq is VERY low, and that's a fact that has been reported on many times, especially in the Army Times, Mother Jones.

And he sure will care, a LOT, if bush gets elected or steals this one too, and freeper gets his arse drafted -or his kid's arse, or his wife's arse- and he or they are sent to Iraq without enough ammo or body armor or rifles or etc etc etc. Yeah, he'll give a damn THEN.

22. Lots of Repug support for the troops here in the South
and these troops are all from the South. Wonder how this is going to play with the Republican base here in the South--that these soldiers are openly defying *'s orders???? This could really damage his credibility as commander-in-chief with some of these repug types down here--but only if the media covers the story.

Officers tend Republican, apx 52% R, 40% Dem.

But the ENLISTED have always been pretty much split down the middle at 30% R, 30% D and 40% Independant. Remember, the majority of enlisted are minorities.

And right now, officers AND enlisteds are NOT HAPPY with mr. bush.

36. There is a real irony here.. We "took over" Iraq more than a YEAR ago
It's an OIL-RICH country, and yet a year later, our control is so poor, that we must TRUCK in fuel??

That's like taking over the North Pole, and having to fly in ice :eyes:

The real story that even in the north, which the news continually tells us is much "safer", a fuel run is considered a "suicide mission"..

Serious disconnect here:eyes:

47. Every Army vehicle has a log book!
That log book has to be kept up to date and every time that vehicle comes back to the motor pool from a trip, it has to pass a technical inspection,(TI)before it goes back out on the road again! Usually the technical inspector is one of the better mechanics in that HQ troop or company and he inspects each and every vehicle in the entire unit, before it leaves the base! While inspecting each vehicle the TI man writes up a report and lists any deficiency or "gig" that he finds, on the vehicle's TI sheet!

The driver of that vehicle and a troop or company level mechanic, MUST correct every deficiency listed on the vehicle TI sheet, before that vehicle is determined to be safe to use on the highway! Until every item listed on the TI sheet attached to the vehicle log book is repaired, that vehicle is "Deadlined"! A deadlined vehicle must be re-inspected by the TI man after the repairs are made and the record of every deficiency listed on the TI sheet that has been listed and repaired is again checked off on the TI sheet, before that vehicle is pronounced serviceable, and the inspection sheet is placed in back the log book! The mechanic who makes the repairs must also sign the TI sheet after the noted repairs are made!

If those vehicles were deadlined there will be proof in the log books! If an officer or an NCO orders those deadlined vehicles out on the road, before the repairs are completed, he is wrong to do so, unless it is a case of extreme emergency!(an alert, an attack and so on)

The ONLY reason a vehicle should stay deadlined, is because the parts are not on hand to repair the vehicle! The reason EVERY vehicle should be kept in a serviceable condition at all times, if possible, is obvious!

You don't have a group of deadlined vehicles just sitting around for days, unless you have some piss poor officers and NCOs in charge of vehicle maintenance, or there are no spare parts to be had! That type of operational readiness invites a large disaster!(clusterflop)

You'd think that with the amount of money the tax payers have spent on Bush's War, there would be spare parts on hand in Iraq, after 18 months! This sounds like another case of the bad apples being higher up the chain of command than EM and NCO level, but the doo-doo always rolls downhill!

50. Right but I will say my Bradley was always technically deadlined
but what you posted is technically right. That, it seems, was part of the reason they gave for not going on the mission (aside from being badly undersupplied)..the vehicles were deadlined. The turned the Army regs around on the Army.

They sent a message in a bottle hoping someone would find it, someone did.

54. Where the hell is all the money going?
A hundred twenty billion buys a lot of spare parts!

I was the TI man for a while and I was a hard ass! It was fun deadlining some of those smart assed Lt.'s rides, over the paint job! In a combat zone the minor gigs shouldn't deadline a vehicle though! You can bet that if those trucks were carried as unserviceable, it was major problems! The longest it ever took us to get parts in the 70s was a couple of days! That was true in the US and in Germany then, even though, the war in Viet Nam required very large shipments of spares! I had to go to the junk yard sometimes, but we kept our vehicles up, or we were in a world of Shei'ite!

If the POL trucks were deadlined, I don't think it would be the driver's fault! If those drivers refused to drive deadlined vehicles, they were probably within their rights to do so! The fact that some higher ranking NCOs were with the men on it, should go in the EM's favor! If someone told me to take off into combat with a vehicle that I thought would fail me, I'd have done what those guys did too! What does the DOD want friggin' Kamikazes? I'd tell the brass to get the higher paid contractors to deliver the goods! Or worse!
