Judith Miller on MSNBC talking about going to jail |
|
Norevll asking her if it is worth it wanted to know if she is willing to go to jail for not talking. she said she has to be willing to go to jail.. it's important not to reveal her sources.

2. If we've learned anything in the last 4 years, we've learned |

that Karl Rove has his fingerprints on everything that just doesn't seem quite right. This throws the spotlight away from his buddy Novak and plants it squarely on Judy Miller, who to Karl is a woman and thus disposable. I don't know anything about Ms. Miller, but I have a feeling she isn't going to gladly accept the role of scapegoat for Karl or Novak, and good for her. I don't believe a reporter should have to reveal their sources, but you know since these were phone calls that that information is available (or was) without even involving the reporter. Judith is a smokescreen and she knows it.

3. Judith Miller is the Rove shill who wrote pro-invasion articles for NYT |
|
She bought the "Saddam is an imminent threat" story hook line and sinker. Either she was used as a tool or she herself is in on the lies.

4. Apparently everybody bought the "Saddam is an imminent |
|
threat"; like I said I don't know anything about her, and if she is in on the lies, then she could very easily go to jail for 18 months and she just doesn't strike me as the type of person who take the fall for these guys. Just a gut feeling.

9. Possible legitimate explanation |
|
Edited on Fri Oct-15-04 09:00 PM by atre
The Supreme Court has said that there is no freedom of the press independent of the freedom of speech. Members of the press do not own any free speech rights that the public at large does not enjoy.
Thus, in Branzburg, decided in 1972, the Court said that a member of the press is not constitutionally entitled to obstruct justice by withholding the names of criminal suspects. An ordinary citizen would not be entitled to do the same, so the same rules must apply to members of the press.
Several states reacted to the decision by enacting state statutes granting to the members of the press within its borders immunity from such prosecutions. These state statutes may the be the reason why Novak is not being pursued, but two individuals who were told but did not aid the source of the leak in disseminating this information (Miller and Cooper) will be going to jail.
Then again, this explanation doesn't make much sense since the aforementioned statutes would apply only to state prosecutions, not federal prosecutions (as we have here). So, in conclusion... beats me.

5. All I can say is bye-bye. |

She belongs in jail. She's NOT going to jail because she exposed government wrongdoing. She's going to jail because SHE'S ATTEMPTING TO COVER-UP A CRIME BY GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL.

7. As a journalist, she is obliged to protect her sources. |
|
On the other hand, she was also obligated to research and report the news in an unbiased manner. A responsibility poorly executed, in my opinion.
Perhaps her grand-standing is Miller's plan of salvaging what's left of her journalistic integrity ... by giving the appearance of commitment to the institution and its protocols. Or maybe her "source" really, really wants to remain anonymous. Lest she be "fucked like she's never been fucked before."
Regardless, I would love to know what (who) she knows ...

10. The law on this matter is VERY clear... |
|
1. Those that reveal the name of an intelligence operative WILL got to jail;
...and....
2. Members of the press are not allowed to protect their sources under this law...they must reveal the name of the person exposing an intelligence operative or they WILL go to jail.

13. Why isn't Novakula in leg irons? |
|
When can we expect Robert Novak to join Ms. Miller in jail? Miller and Novak are the two journalists most responsible for parroting the lies that paved the way for the Bush administration's illegal rush to war. I blame them more than the administration. I expect the Bush administration to lie and deceive. Journalists are not supposed to be puppets of the government, but that is exactly what Miller has been for the last 3 years. Now she refuses to name felons in the administration who endangered our national security by playing politics with a covert CIA agent. This is one case where the public's right to know trumps any claim of journalistic integrity. Judith Miller is a felonious shill of the administration and is now taking the fall for Scooter Libby and Dick Cheney. I'm sure she will be well compensated by the traitors she is protecting. The only hero here and victim is Ambassador Joe Wilson and his wife , Valerie Plame, both true patriots. When I see Judith Miller's name on top of a story, I know that it will be fast and loose with the facts, completely bias, and more likely than not filled with lies and misinterpretations.

14. Have they actually determined a crime has been committed? |
|
Or is that what they are investigating? Does this statute encompass preliminary investigative hearings?

12. There's a huge difference between... |
|
protecting a source who revealed corruption or a crime, and protecting a source who used the press to commit a crime.
Personally, I think once someone squeals (more likely once Kerry is elected), Rove will be the one behind bars.
