Could we send flowers and thanks to Jon Stewart?
I know that the studio is located here:
Daily Show Studios, 513 West 54th Street, NY. Between 10th and 11th Avenues.

What do you all think?

Edited on Fri Oct-15-04 11:42 PM by Jen6
I think that's why Jon Stewart (a comedian, no less) is one of America's last true journalists!

On edit: I think it would be great if one of our professional writers (like Will Pitt) could compose a letter that we all could sign.

And you bet he's going to be getting some very nasty mail over the next while. He should at least have some reassurance that he's got friends out here.

My family and town are full of them and I've about had it. I'm trying not to "hate" them, but there is some real anger directed their way, yes. Eventually, maybe I can learn to feel sorry for them, but not while they're trying to turn our country into a fascist theocracy.

I like flowers...but that's just me :P

Could we do something comedic like? I don't know. I'm avoiding work right now, so I feel guilty trying to think about it right now LOL.

I certainly feel like doing more than buying the book (which I ordered tonight!). It couldn't have been easy going there, sitting in between the two of them, and telling them about themselves.

Man, ever since he was on MTV interviewing that little brown kid whose name I don't remember--I've had a great deal of respect for him.

18. Flowers are just a traditional symbol of achievement
usually given to a great performer after a wonderful performance. What Jon said tonight wasn't comedic, therefore I don't think anything comedy related would be appropriate. It would be good to add in our note that every single one of us intends to vote and remain as politically aware and active as possible. That would mean a lot to him, I think.

I was in for the Byrd flowers, and I suggested the florist we ended up using...I think.... you're right about the comedy, I was just suggesting something a bit different...Oh I don't know.

As I said, LOL, I'm STILL putting off work and am just plain knackered at this point. But I'm in for flowers. I'd also be interested in something like what is suggested below--but so many of us have already donated to the DNC/various orgs.

Thank you for starting the thread!

29. Heheh, i just remembered something
a former boss of mine, Jeffery Katzenberg (a movie studio executive) use to send huge brass balls to anyone who would stand up to him or any other powerful person in the industry for something they really believed in. I don't know where he got them from, but they weighed a ton and came in a big wooden crate. Jeffery was a big Dem contributer. If I still had his phone number, I'd ask his secretary if he had sent out another pair recently!:-)

If we could get our "famous person" Will Pitt to write it up, it would be GREAT! He whips out those editorials, so I'm sure a few sentences wouldn't take him long at all.

I love you, Jon Stewart. Way to go!

24. If we want to honor Stewart's point in all this...
I'd be willing to bet there are actions we could take collectively that would be more gratifying to him than receiving a deluge of bud vases at his office.

First, to Jen6 (whose posts I always enjoy) and others who have posted here - I agree 110% with the praise for Jon Stewart. So please don't read any disrespect into my recommendation that we shift our focus here.

Jon Stewart has been literally begging the mainstream media to hold our government accountable and to focus on the truth, no matter how unpopular it may be, for a long time now.

Let's follow his lead and hold people accountable. Let's walk the walk, in addition to talking the talk. And I suggest we let Stewart know he is our inspiration on this - not with flowers or gifts but with proof our money is where our mouths are...

Instead of spending $35-100 on flowers for Jon at The Daily Show, send it somewhere to support the reservists of the 343rd unit that was detained at gunpoint (by their fellow soliders) for refusing to transport contaminated fuel (already rejected by another platoon) through a treacherous area in Iraq without ground or air cover, in vehicles without proper armor and that could not travel faster than 40 miles per hour.... For more info:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x2497414#2497749

Where to send funds in support? I don't know - I'm hoping someone else will wade in here. Wherever and however we support these reservists, we can each send a postcard to Jon Stewart describing what we've done.

Anyone who watched his frustration grow on the Crossfire appearance show today can surely understand that he'd rather see meaningful action tied to his comments than anything else.

Maybe I'm out in left field on this (wouldn't be the first time). Anyone else?

25. Oh, I think we've all been doing our best in that
department. I've lost count of the Sinclair e-mails, the letters to the editors, the mailings to the neglectful media. And then, of course, those daily efforts to influence our friends, families, co-workers...my guess is that Stewart will be deluged by letters from angry RWers about his obvious partisanship. Flowers-and it would just be one bouquet with a heartfelt letter and lots of signatures-are, as stated previously, simply a symbol of respect and a job well done. I'm not suggesting that anyone spend more than $5 individually; the price of one beverage at Starbucks. It's about encouraging true patriotism. He has a voice the media will listen to, and sadly we do not. Yes, we should help those reservists as well; we can do both! I would also love it if everyone who contributed also wrote to CNN about Stewart's comments AND the reservists story (separately, of course). We need to speak now, while we are still permitted to use our voices.

That's a great way to show your support for Jon! The regular price is $24.95, but it's discounted at some bookstores since it's a "best seller." It's $14.97 at Barnes & Noble & Borders. Abebooks has it available for $10 + shipping.
