At start of Ramadan, Bush praises Muslims for compassion, peace
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush marked the start of Ramadan on Friday by offering his best wishes to the Muslim world, where he is highly unpopular. "I send warm greetings to Muslims in the United States and around the world as they begin observance of Ramadan, the holiest season in their faith," Bush said in a statement.

"By teaching the importance of compassion, justice, mercy, and peace, the Koran has guided many millions of believers across the centuries," the president said. Many Muslims worldwide are angry with Bush over the Iraq war and what they perceive to be a pro-Israeli bias in U.S. Middle East policy. In the United States, Muslims are overwhelmingly supporting Democratic Sen. John Kerry for president, a Zogby International poll showed last month.

Some Muslims believe they have been targeted as part of Bush's war on terrorism after the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, and many were angered when he called for a "crusade" against terrorism, evoking memories of the Christian crusades against Muslims in the Holy Land.

5. Self-aggrandizement.

He's placing himself in the pontifical posture of "Bless you, my children." This is a common authoritarian ploy - hand out a 'recognition' and insinuate a superiority over those who are recognized. Corporate management and military superiors does this all the time. "Employee of the Month" and other specious 'awards' create a psychological "Catch 22" - if the recipient values such an award or recognition, it elevates the grantor as an authority. In doing this, autocrats further establish themselves as standards-makers - further subordinating the recipients.

It's important at such times to remember some cautions: "Show Me The Money!" "Actions Speak Louder Than Words!" "Talk Is Cheap" "Who Died And Made You King?"

Question Authority.
