21. wait - he will get awards for this performance - put them in their place
and much more. Let them know (with his cute one-raised eyebrow leer)
we are out here and know their gig, how they run it and the damage it is doing to our Country. I don't know, maybe 'the honesty award in journalistic broadcasting.

10. On the contrary.
I think that this brought him into the limelight as someone who actually cares about the direction of this country AND the responsibilty of the media. Much more so than Paul Begala and Cucker Farlson.

I was very proud of him for not lambasting the Bush administration, but holding shows like Crossfire and it's ilk responsible for the sorry state of politics these days.

The fact that both Begala and Carlson were trying to change the subject shows me just how right Jon was.

15. I believe this elevated his career. I think he said what a lot of
people have been thinking. I usually cringe when he is being interviewed. He never comes off well to me. I now believe that is because he is always holding back. He did not do that yesterday. When Kerry wins in November I think Stewart will deserve some of the credit. He is the only one out there in TV land saying what needs to be said on a regular basis.

Seriously doubt he ruined his career. Might even have launced a new one. Am thinking a lot of people would love to vote for a guy with the balls to call a dick a dick on national TV

At the very least, his share of viewers probably jumps considerably now.

22. The Only Concern
Is that some people might not want to go on his show 'cos they think they'll get ripped to shreds. But if that is true, why do people still go on O'Reilly? Besides, I think with Stewart he has this thing about always being nice to his guests, even when he asks tough questions. I mean, unlike some of the other political talk hosts, he never really rips into them. Stewart know his facts well and is prepared to question any partisan talking point that smells funny. And when some one smart comes on who has some statistics to back up the rhetoric (and Stewart can't counter) Stewart just smiles and acknoledges his guest's preparedness.

29. He held their feet to the fire about the responsibility of the media
and the spin involved in promoting one side at the expense of another.

Tucker Carlson was being a jerk to him about the questions he asked John Kerry and as they were going to commercial break, Jon Stewart turned to him and said, "you're as big a DICK on your show as you are on others people's." Or something similar...

32. The media thugs will try to ramp up the
"his audience is a bunch of stoned slackers" meme, but it doesn't wash. In my extended family, TDS is watched by every generation. If I miss a show, I can call my eighteen year old niece OR my eighty-six year old aunt!

It won't hurt Jon's career, but it will strike fear in the hearts of the media whores. Is their jig up?

34. He is arguably the most popular comedian in America
today. The Comedy Channel loves the attention. I can't see how this would hurt him. He didn't say anything that most Americans don't agree with. Go back and listen to the audience reactions. They applauded Jon several times. And were enthused that somebody could tell the truth for once.

38. I wonder...
I wonder if this could open the door for Jon to someday have his own political (non-comedy) type show? Kind of like Keith Olberman did when he went from sportscasting (ESPN) to MSNBC.

It would be interesting to see what he could do when he's serious.

40. no way,

He made very valid points. When Carlson tried to tell Stuart The Daily Show was in the same "league" (ie "hard" news programs) he reminded Carlson that The Daily Show's lead in was "puppets making phone calls."

Tucker kept trying to paint TDS in the same light as "Meet the Press", and Stewart calmly kept swatting him away.

It was really refreshing to see Tucker go into full yelling mode and see Jon Stewart sit there and calmly say that shows like crossfire are harming America.

It was also great to see Jon call Tucker a dick. :D

Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 11:21 AM by Sterling
I think it was his coming out to the corpo whores who have been chatting him up lately that he still thinks they suck even though they are fawning over him right now.

I think he made a decision that if he did not call them out he was enabling them like many people even on DU do without even thinking about it.

All the Cable news hacks have been trying to name check him and the show to apeal to his audience which is much bigger than theirs. They are on the way out and know it.

will get if he ever showed up again, I'd say no. Those CNN money whores would love to have him. Jon could have dropped his drawers and soiled Tucker's desk and bowtie boy would've still been kissing his ass.

"You'll never work in this town again Stewart." or "Jon Stewart really lost it on Crossfire." then i say no on both counts. Jon did what many of us have been dying to do, call the mediawhores out for what they really are. I think if anything this will hit home with many, many people. I'm thrilled that he used his own popularity on behalf of all of us. Go Jon Go!
