Evangelical Christianity is a cult...
...that has very little to do with Christ and his teachings. The reason things feel so weird in this country right now, is we are being run by a cult!!!

2. Absolutely. The sadly mislabeled 'religious right' is neither. It's really
nauseating to see Christ's message so distorted and abused.
Jesus died to take away our sins, not our minds!

3. Wasn't this supposed to happen
to the followers of the anti-christ? That there would come a leader, who would claim to be the christ, but was exactly the opposite and that most of the people would be deceived?

10. If God has chose to speak only to Bush it sure diminishes
my feelings for God. There are so many more worthy people in the world to speak to - are they trying to tell us that God is a simpleton?

6. Fundamentalist Christians Aren't Happy Unless They Have Someone To Hate...
Their black/white mindset needs this simplistic notion in order to function.

P.S. Send *me* your money and it will come back to you TENFOLD. The lord will shower his blessings upon you... just send me your money.

8. Fundamentalism is a cult, no matter what the stated religion.
Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 12:43 PM by w4rma
Fundamentalist Jews and Muslims are also just as cultish. They also ignore reality when it is convenient.

25. Note. ONLY fundamentalism. I'm in disagreement with you about evangelicals
Example: President Carter is an evangelical and he is also a liberal Democrat.

11. This is all very scary....
I've noticed the Ev's where I used to work were passing around their gun catalogues and talking about the coming "revolution" where the "liberals" would have to be overcome by force. They now control the government. Remember Rev. Moon was originally branded a leader of a cult...now he has the ear of the president and is bankrolling smears
like "Stolen Honor".

12. Let's make the distinction
between evangelical Christians and fundamentalists. There are tons of politically liberal evangelicals. (Hint: they aren't white.)

There's a big, big gap between evangelicals and fundamentalists--like the difference between Jimmy Carter and Pat Robertson.

13. We are run by fascists who are using religion and mysticism
as a tool toward power. There is nothing Bush would like more than to control Christianity and all it's churchesl, ergo the faith based money he offers them. Like some other past fascists.

16. Many people speak on these issues...
and I might as well too.

First off....Read what Jesus said, if you can follow the path to forgivness, mercy, compassion, you are on the right path.

Second off..."Even a fool may seem wise, when he keeps his mouth closed". If those who profess their religion would actually practice it, this world would be a better place, regardless of faith.

Just my 2 cents....:)

Which is usually the case.
They are sucked in and only learn about what they got them selves into when it is too late.

Well NOVEMBER 3rd will be too late!

23. No, in a cult, the leaders know they are lying
That's the standard I use, and for this reason: presenting dangerous religions as cults blocks the understanding that religion as a whole is dangerous, it isn't some safe and harmless superstition distorted by fanatics and a few gullible followers. Read Exodus for example: Moses was as fanatical as the Taleban; he had a man put to death for collecting sticks on the sabbath. Abraham was ready to execute his own son based on a voice in his head.

28. All religions are cults. So what's the point?
I've never understood the idea of calling one kind of religion a "cult" and another is "legit".

They are ALL cults, based on superstition and have no basis in reality. That's why they are RELIGION and not SCIENCE.

Sure, some may be more innocuous, looked at from a logical viewpoint.

To ME, the heaven's gate people castrating themselves and commiting suicide while waiting for the UFO is "worse" than a Unitarian church that performs same-sex marriages.

But as long as the heaven's gate guys don't bother me, it's their business to practice their religion as they please. How is what they do any worse than US fundies or Islamic radicals using their religions to justify murderous wars?

I understand the fear of the void of death that drives people to cling to these religions. But I don't understand what makes the dogmatic hatemongering religions so appealing to so many.

29. That tent evangelism that is now on radio and TV
has always been a business. Rent the old movie "Elmer Gantry" if you get a chance and see how it was done back in the early part of the last century. I don't think the M/O has changed much, just the venue and now they can reach millions instead of thousands with their message, "send us money, even if you can't afford it because Jesus will reward you tenfold". It's purpose is to make the religious leaders rich.

"Kerry may be ahead in the polls, but God is always behind in the polls"

Bush = God to these people.
