Mary Cheney thing
Whenever I explain to folks that Mary Cheney is a nationally known lesbian activist, a public figure and a highly paid operative in her father's campaign, their reaction is roughly as follows:

"Oh, really? I didn't realize that. Heck, what's the big deal, then?"

People have to be made to realize that M. Cheney was NOT "outed" and that not one shred of her privacy was violated.

Why isn't the Kerry camp making that clear?

1. That makes me feel better too
That was the ONLY thing that Kerry has done that disappointed me.

3. I think Kerry knew exactly what he was saying by bringing up her name...
Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 05:49 PM by TrustingDog
He did in a most respectful way but the message has turned out to be:

Repugs condone and defend homosexuality! This will confuserate the fundie camp - I'll bet they're having migraines.

9. He's been so smart all along, that what you say must be true--
He wanted to expose the hypocrisy of the fundies.

Still, personally, I felt so bad for her because I can imagine that if it were me--activist or not--I wouldn't want to be the poster child for "lesbians" on a WORLD STAGE.

5. Tell your friends
People resent this because they Kerry "outed" Mary Cheney. It's like saying that be "outed" Harvey Feinstein.

2. I knew that
I have seen that fact stated in print media over the past few years. Anyone who didn't know of her lesbianism, doesn't read the newspaper much.

8. Clear or not...
it may not have been the best comment. Kerry is trying to capture the elderly and female vote. Even though she was already out, a number of folks in the combined target class of voters would rather not be so specific about such things, or hear their candidate do so.

I didn't personally think his comment was a problem, until I started getting that reaction during canvassing.

11. If these "undecided voters" were upset
with Kerry saying EXACTLY the same thing Edwards did-and got a grateful smile from Cheney-then they really weren't "undecided," but Bush backers in disguise.

12. Send them to BLOGACTIVE
...where the issue is ripped to shreds by a gay activist, himself. It will open their homophobic eyes, in more ways than one!

14. Rethugs are clever.
They feigned indignation over this to keep the following from the public.

"I don't know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don't care. It's not that important. It's not our priority."
- G.W. Bush, 3/13/02

* Bush sarcasticaly said that Kerry was stating an "exageration" in mentioning Bush's disregard for Osama bin Laden. Bush is a freakin' liar but this matter has been buried with the Mary Cheney situation. Rethugs view elections as War. In war they believe that they are above the law and ignore any rules or laws in their quest to win at any cost. Lying, cheating, even murdering is part of their agenda to win.
