What ever happened with Torturegate?
Is that over? Who took responsibility for the apparent widespread practice of illegal torture?

1. Promotion on the way for US head of Abu Ghraib jail (Ricardo Sanchez)

As US officials in Iraq were counting the cost of the devastating suicide attack in Baghdad's green zone, Defence Department insiders in Washington said that the Pentagon is angling to promote Lieutenant-General Ricardo Sanchez, who ran prisons in Iraq at the time of the abuses in Abu Ghraib jail.

Senior Pentagon officials, including the Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Richard Myers, have told colleagues they are determined to pin a fourth star on General Sanchez.

Mr Rumsfeld and others recognise that General Sanchez remains politically "radioactive," according to an unnamed Defence Department official, and would wait until after the presidential election next month and continuing investigations of the Abu Ghraib affair have faded before putting his name forward.

3. Swept under the rug.
I wonder if our intrepid international correspondents will bother to connect the beheading of westerners and terrorist bombings in Iraq to the events of Abu Ghraib, like some maybe really pissed off former inmates or their relatives.
