Let's do a quick straw poll
Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 08:58 PM by Delightful
To prove , once and for all , whether the pollsters are correct when they say that 7 to 14 % of Democrats are going to vote for Bush . Then when we see poll results , we can adjust them accordingly with the figure this poll elicits .

I want you all to be honest now , otherwise we will just be kidding ourselves . How many people do you personally know that are Democratic and are voting for Bush ? It would also be helpful if you approximated how many people that you know are Democrats ( as opposed to Republican converts ) , and are going to vote for John Kerry . For example , if you know about 50 Democrats , but only one of them is voting for Bush , we can say that approximately 2% of the people that you know are Democratic , are voting for Bush .

This will hopefully give us some idea of the true figure of Democratic converts to Bush , without bias from pollsters .

I didn't set this up as a multiple choice poll , because anonymous Republicans could skew the result . This way we can at least see everyone taking part .

Thankyou for your time .:)

1. None

Zero. I know about 40-45 surefire Democrats (plus a lot more that I suspect are, but with whom I've never broached politics, like coworkers), and none of them is voting for *.

2. Well that's Zero percent so far
I suspect that the true figure will definitely be less than 5% . How could any informed individual switch to Bush ? It makes no sense .

7. I know 20+ democrats.
Out of those 20 I know one who may vote for Bush, my brother in law (who is an idiot).

His vote for Bush is not 100% sure, this jerk listens to his wife (adjectives I will not use on a public forum) who brow beats him to follow her opinions.

11. If he votes for Bush
Then approximately 5% of the people you know who are Democratic are voting for Bush . Now if we add your result to the previous five Zero results , so far just under 1% of Democratic voters are voting for Bush .

In my family, the best way to handle it was to agree publicly and vote privately.

17. My wifes brother.
He says very little, his mother lives with us and is a rabid Democrat, so he does not express his opinion to her. His wife is very vocal and tries to bait both me and my wife into an argument.
I ignore both him and his wife.

8. I did some phone banking
And I can tell you that there are registered Democrats who are planning to vote a straight Repub ticket. Fact is, there are folks who are too lazy, set in their ways or whatever to change their registration to Republican.

I am convinced that these DINOs are "Religious Republicans" that have simply been convinced that it's their duty to vote for Geo. W. Bush. Rove and his cohorts in the Xtian Right have done an excellent job of convincing actual Christians to vote for the Chimperor.

Never mind the fact that the number of abortions actually rise when Repubs control the government. Dammit! Republicans say they're agin' 'em and that should be enough!

10. Oh yeah, I live across the street from a
...registered Repub who can't stand Bush and is voting for Kerry. She's gonna be a ticket-splitter, God bless her wonderful little self. She is even going to be there next week at the neighborhood showing of Fahrenheit 9/11.

See? There are good Repubs out there who know the difference between a real President and somebody who plays one on television.

12. I know one person who is a Democrat
and who describes herself as ultra-liberal who was, as of August, voting for Bush.

She said that Kerry was a "flip-flopper" and when I tried injecting some facts into the discussion, her husband shouted me down.

To preserve some civility, I let it drop. It was time to go, anyway.

I should say that being in New York, her vote doesn't matter (I hope it doesn't, anyway). I'm more upset that my Republican husband, who was undecided, is now leaning to vote for Bush. Of course, he's terribly uninformed. I use the dinner table discussion with our kids to give facts to them, and to him.

I guess even though his vote won't much matter here, it's personally disappointing. His reasoning? We shouldn't change leadership in the middle of a war.

Sigh.

I really thought about it. My mother and my father, though totally unsuited for each other, were and are both life long Democrats, even when they get a little nutty and move towards the reich. All siblings of voting age are voting Kerry because * has fucked over the military so badly. Grandparents, same same.

Friends: even the libertarians I know are voting K or the Lib ticket. Most of my friends are either atheist or agnostic and usually liberal, so I can't think of anyone that was Dem and has changed their minds.

Walking the precinct, not a single unaffiliated voter has said, thanks but no thanks, I'm for * and all of the Dem registered sporadic voters have been very pro-Kerry and ABB.

Even Mr. Pcat's mom, a life-long Republican (of the Abe Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt variety) is voting for Kerry.

So....

0.

18. So far the result is as follows
1.Nine of you know no-one that is Democratic and voting for Bush .
2.One of you knows 5% of of the Democrats they know , who are voting for Bush .
3.One of you knows two possible Bush converts , but as we don't know what proportion this represents , we will put this result to one side , until we know more info . The records can be adjusted later .

So adding the results of group 1 and 2 , approximately half of one percent of known Democratic voters , will be switching their vote to Bush . I know this is not a scientific poll , but anyone can see that there is a vast difference between this result , so far , and the latest Zogby poll .

I am off to bed now as it is just after 4am. , here in the UK . If anyone wants to update this poll as more data comes in , then that would be great .

'Night all .:)

My grand uncle is voting Bush for no other reason then he believes that abortion should be illegal. He thinks Bush is a jerk, dumb and a terrible president but we can't change his mind because of abortion.

...and not a single one will vote for Bush. Never even crossed their minds.

I know 2 independents and 2 Republicans who can't wait to vote for Kerry.

For another demographic: I'm African-American and I don't know a single AA who will vote for Bush. In fact, I have family members who registered this year, and who either have never voted before, or are voting for the first time in a long time, all voting for Kerry.

25. Well, I live in an area that....
might skew the poll some. As I stated in...

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x2499161#2500936

things are a bit conservative here. Really conservative, yet highly Democratic.

So, of the people I know, I would say the numbers make the 7 to 14% look a little anemic.

29. The latest updated results show
1.Twelve of you know no Democratic voters who are voting for Bush .
2.One of you knows 5% of Democratic voters who are voting for Bush .
3.One of you knows 7% of Democratic voters who are voting for Bush .
4.One of you knows 10% of Democratic voters who are voting for Bush .
5.One of you lives in a area where you think the pollsters data of 7-14% of Democratic voters who are voting for Bush is a bit conservative , so in the efforts of fairness , we will call it approximately 20% .

The result now stands at two and half percent of all known Democratic voters , are switching their vote to Bush . I know this is only a small snapshot and is no way scientific , but it still shows a startling difference between our results and those of the professional pollsters . If we presume their lower figure is the most accurate , there is still a difference of over 4% , which would be more than enough to tip the election our way .

Happy times .
