How long do you think it will take to know who "won" the whitehouse ?

We will be in court. I am convinced of that. Kerry will have a legal fight. But, he will win.

6. Provisional ballots

If the election isn't a landslide, then the courts and lawyers will take over. Look for another long fight, ending up in the Conservative U.S. supreme court again. Their last decision was bogus, it hindged on the inequality of using different types of voting schemes,called it the "equal protection" decision . Like almost all states ,Florida used different types of ballots, machines, why a bogus decision. If they are not going to count the popular votes, why vote? why have an election? The whole clouded provisional ballot issue is yet to be settled. Proposed because of the disenfranchaised voters in 2000, as one remedy to allow voters to vote , who had their records lost, or intentionally changed, the time needed to check each for voter validity , will take weeks, I doubt the republicans will stand for allowing all the votes to be counted, as if all are, they will surely lose. Like others have stated, it may descend into cahos, and attacks, like last time, when delay sent a cadre of thugs to Florida to "get it done" with physical intimidation.They will use anything at their disposal, as like with the jihadists ,they think they have "god" on their side.
