my nephew (13yo) says he'll vote for bush...
WHY?

according to my sister, his history teacher told the class that if Kerry wins, there will be a draft!

my sister, no fan of the kool-ade, was NOT pleased. and, she's especially disappointed because she really likes this teacher.

she's *hoping* that her son misunderstood but WILL talk to the teacher.

if * wins, she's already making plans to get him out of the country.

and, still, my repub parents just DON'T GET IT... I mailed them the Eisenhower Op-Ed hoping that something coming from THEIR side would sway them to vote... in their grandchildren's interest.

<sigh>

2. Why I Will Vote for John Kerry for President
Why I Will Vote for John Kerry for President by John Eisenhower

The Presidential election to be held this coming Nov. 2 will be one of extraordinary importance to the future of our nation. The outcome will determine whether this country will continue on the same path it has followed for the last 3½ years or whether it will return to a set of core domestic and foreign policy values that have been at the heart of what has made this country great.

Now more than ever, we voters will have to make cool judgments, unencumbered by habits of the past. Experts tell us that we tend to vote as our parents did or as we "always have." We remained loyal to party labels. We cannot afford that luxury in the election of 2004. There are times when we must break with the past, and I believe this is one of them.

As son of a Republican President, Dwight D. Eisenhower, it is automatically expected by many that I am a Republican. For 50 years, through the election of 2000, I was. With the current administration’s decision to invade Iraq unilaterally, however, I changed my voter registration to independent, and barring some utterly unforeseen development, I intend to vote for the Democratic Presidential candidate, Sen. John Kerry.

And, yeah, it's funny. But I also hope you don't think all southerners are backward, knuckle-dragging rednecks. Nah, you don't, I'm sure.

I'm an Arkansan. My state gave our party not just Bill Clinton but also Wes Clark, Dale Bumpers, and J.W. Fulbright. I'll not argue that there are some ignorant people in my state and throughout the South, but that's true of all other states too. Name one state that has no Bush voters.

Yes, we're very aware that 13-year-olds can't vote. Crazy. Everyone knows they have to be 14 and married before they can cast a ballot. :silly:

...does your nephew have Channel One shown daily in his school? If so, they did a draft segment and showed Bush saying there would be no draft. The "news" presentation was slanted and didn't explain clearly why there are draft fears. My middle schoolers (I'm a teacher) were confused by it, too.

All they heard was "draft," Bush says "no draft," and they missed everything else. It was a very poorly done segment!

It sucks that we allow these things to be presented to kids daily. You should see the commercials we HAVE to show. Kids refusing to socialize with kids unless they use clearasil, etc..etc...and we HAVE to show it to them...horrible

8. It was a PERFECTLY done segment.

"All they heard was "draft," Bush says "no draft," and they missed everything else. It was a very poorly done segment!"

No, it served the purpose. Bush said "No Draft" and that was it. your kids all think now "Bush says no draft, and Kerry is the opponent of Bush, so that must mean Kerry is FOR a draft..."

Channle One sucks big elephant dicks. But what can you do? The school administrators (thanks in no small part to "Every Child Left Behind") have to rely on these corporate bucks to survive. That's how you wind up with the school colours being red and white and the sports jersies looking like the label off a Coke can...And the Nike "SWOOSH!" on the scoreboard

That one really gets me. Lots of pop machines in the school (the school gets the profits) but only a little whining about what a shame it is that the kids are getting obese. Hmm, must be what they're eating at home...Milk is a dollar, but pop is only 75 cents...

From an objective POV, it was a poorly-done segment, but it served the intent of those who paid for it PERFECTLY...

11. Okay, as someone who doesn't have Channel One in their kids' schools
Edited on Sun Oct-17-04 08:28 PM by txindy
Can you turn off the sound? Can you hold other activities while the commercials (or entire program) are on? Read them a book. Do the hokey-pokey. Yes, I'm kidding, but not entirely. I understand it must be shown (school board, no doubt), but do you have to pay strict attention to it?

22. I worked for this company just as they were making Channel 1 happen.
Edited on Mon Oct-18-04 02:51 AM by anarchy1999
There is no more evil in this world than Channel 1 in our schools.

God help us all from evil that they do in the name of "God".

We are all in deep, deep trouble.

Save our kids and leave the no kids left behind bs behind us all.

I will be more than willing to take this company on. It will be the last thing I do in this lifetime.

:nuke:

I knew this country was really going to hell in the proverbial handbasket, but *that* really rips it!

Are you able to use it as a "teachable moment"?

My sympathies.....

Channel One. He rightly said that it was useless. And as a result, we get to leave earlier.

He's got five years to develop critical thinking skills before he's actually old enough to vote.

I'd crawl so far down this teacher's throat they'd need an enema to get me out.

making political statements like that in the classroom. If the teacher won't set the class straight, then you should talk to the school administrators.
