6. Heard it on XM
She got confused when he asked her if her paper endorsed Kerry. She didn't know, but she thinks they will, since they are all liberal. Then she said liberals don't read. She also said what the papers did wouldn't matter since Bush has been ordained by God. I was in the military base commissary ATM drive=thru and saw a strange sign on a car - painted on the windshield was "EAT BUSH". I thought it might say beat bush, so I circled around to make sure.. Made my day.

You nailed it . Jesus was trying to guide us away from the vengeful God to the forgiving and understanding God. Where did we lose him.?
First time we have problems and we go off guns blazing. It seems that we miss the point that George let us get attacked and is still not protecting us. That's his main job. We need a new Pres. Hello JFKerry.

8. But people who believe that big daddy in the sky...
zapped the world into being and who also believe in the 'talking snake theory' of evolution, and who think that bowing on their knees in prayer should be considered akin to medical treatment, should be considered fit for command?

These born again nutcakes really need to go F* themselves. Maybe that would help shake off some of that pesky puritanism that seems to stick to them like snot to a kleenex.

Cotton Mather would be proud of the half-wit, xtian taliban of this country. We should be disgusted by it.

!!!!Dead guy on a stick, it aint just for breakfast anymore!!!!!

22. Okay, that tears it.
There are a lot of issues with which I disagree with my fellow liberals. But I hold my tongue on a lot of stuff, because I feel that the thing that draws us together as thinking Americans is the removal -- once and for all -- the type of evil represented by the neocons and fascists that have infested this country for so long.

But your post is probably the most insensitive and outright stupid one I've ever seen on this board. I'm wondering if you really are a liberal or...

I mean, are you trying to show everyone just how full of hate and venom you are? Having studied Rhetoric, I am struggling to grasp your intended audience, just what point you would enrich us with, or what command of language you possess that would set you apart from the most avid rightwing moran.

31. Apparently, my point needs little further clarification.
If it offends, that's just the way it is. I have no love of religion, nor do I really care that much about the feelings of a herd of rabid fundies that believe such fantasy-world nonsense.

To me, religion is something that must be overcome, not something that I should be expected to offer contrived respect.

Having myself gone from wanting to believe in Catholicism as a teen, moving to 10 years Asatru and paganism, and finally in my late 30s coming to the conclusion that it's ALL a big, stinking pile of excrement and a huge waste of time, I honestly don't care who I offend.

33. You have every right to feel the way you do.
But your original post was in clear violation of the message board rules. I don't agree with a lot of positions here, either, but I am very much opposed to using insensitive and hate-filled language. The "dead man on a stick" reference tears at the very foundation of some pretty profound beliefs of some of your fellow DUers here.

This is the DU equivalent of referring to gays as "queers," "faggots," etc. Or if a person is black, to invoke the forbidden "N" word. That is what this is like.

(Note that I didn't hit the alert button, since I believe that we're on the same side.)

but I disagree. And really, if it's too offensive, hit the alert button. I'm on the same side, but probably further to the left than many of you, which is fine, I suppose.

The difference is we can't choose the color of our skin, nor does the color of our skin matter. It doesn't 'color' our world view. Nor can we be selective about who our biological impulses fuel us to find attractive.

However, we can decide whether or not we live in ignorance. In my opinion, it borders on mentally ill to invest time in big daddy (or, to the wiccans and matriarchal neo-pagans, big mamma in the sky), role playing games. I wasted a large part of my life with this crap and really don't have any tolerance for it.

A friend of my wife, an evangelical woman, encouraged my wife not to 'make trouble' over very egregious labor law viloations because, 'we shouldn't get involved in such negativity and god will punish the director of the daycare center in the afterlife, anyway." This kind of pie in the sky crap doesn't fly with me and this is what religion does to people... We'll endure the pains of this world because a better one awaits. bullshit. We need to abandon this crap and move to erase the 'pains of this world', which manifest in ways COMPLETELY under our control in terms of economics and social justice, ourselves. So, when the catholics abandoned liberation theology, I abandoned the catholics. So whenever anybody says that they are going to pray for the recently unemployed or for those losing their lives in a corporate war in Iraq, I say, don't waste your time in prayer. Take action on the physical level, not the fantasy level..

anyway, I'm rambling. Hit the alert button if you feel you must, but I won't back down.

Best wishes,

Will

I have always believed that religious fundamentalists are actually mentally ill. I believe that Bush is mentally ill if he really believes that God speaks through him. Jim Jones believed that so did David Koresh. Both of those guys were certifiably insane.

37. YOU obviously haven't read much history about Cotton Mather...
if you equate him with modern fundies (who, by the way, are far more likely to justify their crimes and hypocrisies with quotes from the Old Testament or Saul of Tarsus than Jesus Christ).

The only book conservatives read is the Bible, and it seems to me that most don't even bother to read the New Testament. To each his own I guess.

I think support for Bush is the ideal litmus test for determining who is "them."

14. This ordained by God thing
Is really starting to get frightening. I can't believe how many people buy into that garbage. I remember learning in school about the days of the Divine Right of Kings and we all had a chuckle about how naive people were back then.

Of course, Bush certainly doesn't do much to discourage it, with comments like "I can feel the people praying for me". He's a fucking nutbag and so is the whole Christian right. If America is going to get back on track we NEED to take on the Christian right. Like it or not, they are only getting stronger.

26. That's a new one. I always heard that liberals read too much, were

too intelligent, too educated, too logical, too sensible, too well-paid.

(OK, I made it up about hearing the last three, but education, reading and higher intelligence usually do encourage logic and sensibility, and they certainly lead to jobs that pay relatively well. Or they did before the Chimperor took power. If he retains power, we may face an employment market based entirely on adherence to certain Protestant beliefs. )

The freeper at my husband's workplace says that "Liberals don't think for themselves, that they don't have an original thought AND that they really would be better off if they would just try some critical thinking once in a while." My husband told him to well........cheney off. Would that be considered "original thought?"
