He did not have to deal with the fake piety of our modern day politicians. Using Bush's faith based, born again con we could go one step further on the esteemed Doctor and say " piety is the first refuge of a politician looking for votes". If a little money gets thrown in with the votes, that much the better.
In this ruthless exploitation of the faithful and the gullible, Bush resembles no one so much as the Jimmy Swaggarts, Jim Bakkers, Pat Robertsons and other wannabes who populate our TVs, separating people from their money. We should not be surprised by this act of Bush who we may recall paraded around conspicuously with a copy of a book on Winston Churchill, a copy we can be sure was never read unless Condi read it to him as a bedside story. His piety was revealed as fake when Kerry quoted the Bible as saying" By their works shall ye know them".If you had a close look on Bush's face at that instant, one saw both disdain and fear;Kerry was treading on his turf!
I am sure that our mainstream media used to whitewashing every act or word of this administration would not express the least bit of skepticism of this born again charlatan. We have to expose this in bits and pieces to our friends, especially those who have been taken in by this act.

As Mr. Bierce said, "Patriotism has been defined as the last resort of a scoundrel. With all due respect to an enlightened but inferior lexicographer, I beg to submit that it is the first."
But your main point is well taken. The resort to "faith" in political matters is a deadly thing, and most generally adopted by the criminal and the lunatic. It is easy to determine the difference between the good who appeal to faith and the bad: the good are willing to suffer as the exercise of their faith; the bad are willing to inflict suffering as the exercise of theirs.
