turned the other cheek, fought for the outcasts of society, preached forgiveness, was a liberal, long hair hippie. basically the only thing Jesus would have had in common with the GOP is pro-life. but he would also be anti-death penalty, for the poor, against war. In my opinion, Ghandi and MLK have translated Christs message better than Falwell and Robertson have ever done.
oh yeah im jewish

5. I don't think he would be pro-life in the sense of anti-abortion |
|
He never said anything about the issue, and of course, it was a common practice as it always has been. He had compassion for the suffering. That would determine what he thought about abortion.

3. He challenged an oppressive |

religious system. And and oppressive political system.
Jesus was soft on crime. He said "Those without sin can cast the first stone."
Today Jesus softens hearts so that we can respond to brother and sisters in need.
Jesus commands us to give all our possessions to the poor and take up our cross and follow him.
Yes indeed Jesus Is a Liberal!
Thanks for the reminder

Talked to the woman at the well when it was taboo for a man to speak to a lone woman.
He was NOT a social conservative. He stopped the people from stoning to death the woman who committed adultery.
BTW, interesting post.

12. Jesus was an idealist, not an anarchist. |
|
Jesus believed that through personal spiritual change, the individuals in society could become better people, thus creating something of a communism where society functions with organization, but with complete social, economic, and political equality.
He did not believe that the removal or destruction of government was an important or neccessary step.
And that essay aint gonna prove that.

7. That's the kind of thing I like to hear ... |
|
A sect of my relatives, who are hardcore fundamentalist Southern Baptists, and one cousin in particular have tried to impress upon me that my being a liberal means I'm going to burn in hell. Years ago I adopted a retort that tends both to piss them off and shut them up in the same breath.
Jesus was a liberal Jew. Jesus didn't burn in hell.
Since they hate both Jews and liberals, it's a double-whammy mind-fuck that leaves them speechless. What's better is they can't refute it. They, who quote Bible verses at breakfast, lunch, dinner, before and after going to the toilet, and any other time the mood hits them, do know enough to know I have facts on my side. And they know that I'll shoot them down with their own words if they try to make an issue of it.

9. Who do they quote? Christ? or Saul of Tarsus and the Old Testament? |
|
It has been proven that the more fundamentalist a person is, the more likely they are to justify themselves with passages from Saul or the Old Testament and the less likely they are to refer to the four Gospels of Christ.

Except for Revelation. They love that one, although usually in conjunction with some stuff from Daniel.
It's really rather ironic. I don't know that I've ever heard them "quote" Jesus. They pray to him before meals and at church when led by their pastor, but when they get in one of their reciting moods, it's almost always OT, focusing on the harsher stuff.

11. That's how it is, Roy. Fundies are genuinely "Antichrist" |
|
in the literal sense of the word. And I know they love Revelation because they work themselves into the "good" parts, just as Josef Goebbels tried to inspire his cohorts with the suggestion that one day they would be "in a fine color film" and should act in such a way as to make sure that the world would not hiss them when they appeared on the screen.
Of course, they probably skim over the part of Revelation where it says that the lovers and makers of lies will be cast into the lake of fire... but, hey!
At any rate, I feel quite certain that some folks are going to be in for a "hell" of a surprise on Judgment Day.

Jesus was far far far far left of liberal. Jesus believed that through personal spiritualization, the world could be converted to a perfect way of living.
That isnt exactly liberalism, but you can be sure hed be voting dem if he lived in a swing state.

14. Jesus was a radical, and he'd be crucified by the "Church" today... |
|
..if he were here.
It is important to note that I'm not for a minute suggesting that every profession Christian in America would persecute Jesus or act like a "pharisee" if he were here today. Just like back then there are always exceptions, who would become his disciples. But I believe there is enough an a power base of "Pharisees" and "teachers of the law" in modern-times organized religion, that they would find a way to eliminate him because his message is subversive and dangerous to establishment power mongering.

It is so fascinating to be watching as many in the "evangelical" type believers are having their eyes opened, or are finding their voice when they realize how the nature of Jesus works have been hijacked. Yet just such topics as this show that there is beginning a division in the evangelical sphere. Halleluja! :)

Can't say that I can single them out to blame. I remember a time that most of the people I know supported the war, liberal and conservative. If I indict one party for being mislead I would have to indict 75% of the country. The problem is systemic rather than Religious. Our entire culture needs to be turned on it's head. How in the world can we ever hope to have peace if we only see each other as competitors.

This is off the topic, but the existance of Jesus is about as documented as you can get from that time period, in Biblical reference and in secular (the Jewish people of the time referenced him as well). One can disagree about what Jesus' existance meant. But you would be hard pressed to find an authority, secular or religious, who would deny his existance.
