Help me change my family's votes
i'm more or less the only kerry voter in my immediate family, as well as in the general extended one that are close....... i consider this a failure of mine. i'm generally persuasive in other areas, and around other people, but, they just think vastly differently than i about this and there's little chance of changing those lifetime tendencies of theirs.

but in any event, i've been informing my dad more about the rev. sun myung "loonie" moon, after he quoted me something from the washington times and i said, do you know who owns the washington times? when he said he didn't care, i appealed to the christian in him, which would certainly be concerned, i'd think, over someone proclaiming himself the messiah (and so forth) as moon has done.

so, if i can link moon and bush convincingly, he says he'll probably change his vote. maybe not to kerry, but it wouldn't be going to bush either and that's great (if you'll notice, i'm in a swing state here runnin' a close race). and, if i'm able to convince him, the rest should be even easier to persuade, or dissuade, depending on which angle you're looking at it from, in their vote.

i know of moon's ties to daddy bush, but, what about for smirk? i figured i'd ask since there are probably quite a few with links already handy who've thoroughly checked this out before (even indirect links may help, particularly if they're a bit nutty themselves, like lahaye).

help me change some votes :bounce:

2. It is now legal to own an assault weapon, try intimidation...
...just kidding, but if all else fails, you vote by absentee ballot now, then call the polling office anonymously and report your family members as illegal unregistered aliens, who were a part of a voter registration fraud by republicans buying votes. That may at least slow some of them down of Nov 2.

4.  I would quote him the lines about Bush doing lines of coke
at camp David in the new Kitty Kelley book "The Family".

Poppy IS the main man behind this presidency, then Cheney. Geedubya is a figurehead.

You might hunt for ties between Cheney and Moon, since Cheney is the more powerful figure.

Another significant link is Rev. Moon and Tim LaHaye, author of the "Left Behind" series. He has taken lots of $$$ from Moon.

And of course they crowned moon in one of the rooms in congress this year, I think John Warner arranged that, there is actually a picture of him wearing the gold crown. Moon also gave $3 million to Jerry Falwell's Liberty University.

Their is a great website, I think it is called "MoonieWatch" or something, if I can find it, I'll come back and post.

5. here's an indirect link:
"Cult leader's long-time follower confirmed as trade ambassador"

President Bush may have made history by appointing a long-time follower of a billionaire "cult leader" to a top position of influence. It seems no president has ever placed someone with such a "cult" portfolio this high in government.

Josette Shiner served Rev. Moon of the Unification Church for decades. After many years at the Washington Times, a newspaper controlled by Moon, she ended her service there as its managing editor.

But perhaps at her new job Shiner may help the self-proclaimed "messiah," who once made payroll at her former paper possible.

As a deputy U.S. trade representative Josette Shiner will have considerable influence within Asia. Interestingly, this is exactly where her mentor Moon has considerable investments, in nations such as Korea and China.

But no one seems to care about this potential conflict of interest Shiner's close personal association and historical allegiance to Moon might pose.
"Mrs. Shiner has a wide-ranging and strong background…and past work experience make her a very able candidate for the job in front of her," crowed Sen. Charles E. Grassley, Iowa Republican and chairman of the Finance Committee, quoted within The Washington Times.

7. some more
President-Elect George W. Bush has a strong personal and financial connection with the cult-like Moonie church, say sources. Critics say the Moonie church opposes Christianity and the American way.

In fact, the Bush family may have received as much as $10 million from the Moonies in recent years. Rev. Sun Myung Moon considers himself a personal friend of our new president, according to newspaper reports.

The incoming chief executive's own father - former President George H. Bush - has been courted by the Rev. Moon's Unification Church since he became vice president in the Reagan administration, says a report by investigative journalist and Newsweek correspondent Robert Parry.

Rev. Moon, now 80, was even a VIP guest at the Reagan-Bush inauguration.

6. The article discussed
in this thread http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x1088069 touches on the Moonie relationship.

And depending on how much of a Bible thumper your dad is, you might want him to take a look at this screed saying Bush is the AntiChrist. It should at least give him enough pause to get him to vote Libertarian, which is better than voting for the Chimpster, I mean, the AntiChrist.

11. welp
my dad's not a bible beater..... but the moon thing could be enough to sway him nonetheless. there should, of course, be other things that do the same, but, i guess that's not always how it works..... i have the moon angle though, so, you have to work with what's available i guess.

moon is another one of those stories that make you go, "why the fuck is nobody talking about this? why isn't this an issue?" i mean, it isn't as though he's just one of your average nutcases giving an unsolicited sidewalk sermon to passersby, and is politely ignored....... he's a prominent figure in washington in particular, friend to major political figures past and present, and filthy rich proprietor, etcetera..... whom is politely ignored (in the media).

i know there's a connection to chimp.......

thanks for all the links, i'm just gonna have to see what i can squeeze outa those and google bomb a little more.

10. I can offer you
sympathy (but it is very hard to change people's minds when they are made up). Keep working on them and don't get discouraged--but lots of families are split.

I have--
14 relatives in Southern California--ALL voting for Bush (I know--terrible--at least we will take California without them)

2 relatives in Northern California---who are voting for Bush, but 3 more in Northern California who will vote for Kerry (YAY at least they Bushee's are out numbered in the North)

1 relative in Nevade--I am pretty sure he will vote for Kerry (but not 100% sure)

2 relatives in New Mexico--Both solid for Kerry

1 relative in Penn--solid for Kerry (but her husband may go Bush)

2 relatives in Louisiana--Both for Bush

1 relative in Ohio for Bush, but 2 in Ohio for Kerry.

1 relative in Texas voting for Bush

3 relatives in Alabama ALL for Bush (I suspect their are many more--it is too depressing to talk to them)

8 relatives in Florida ALL for Bush and 1 in Florida for Kerry.

4 relatives in North Carolina--ALL for Bush.

I have a huge family--all over the place too--so these are the ones that I know for sure how they will vote. 36 Bush and 10 Kerry. I hate to say it--but the only good bright spot is that 2 of the most reliable and stalwart Republicans in the family died since the last election--otherwise it would be 38 to 10. Sometimes these things are very depressing. But I am not one of those people who would give up on their family. We all actually have fun arguing politics--and believe it or not we all love and respect each other even though we disagree. I will continue to work on them though!!!
