The most striking thing about Jon's appearance on Crossfire.
I've shown it to a few people now, and of course I watched it each time I did so. What really struck me about what he said and what he was doing there was that the audience CHEERED him when he made his points. There was more there than laughter at his jokes and they didn't give him the obligatory "good point" clap. Crossfire's own audience agreed with Jon that Crossfire itself is a big steaming bag of Spin Shit.

What that means is that of all the people who wanted to see Crossfire that day, the ones that made the greatest effort to view the program (and theoretically Crossfire's most faithful audience) agreed that the program was nothing more than an extension of political public relations. I think that's what got Carlson so pissed off, too. That the crowd wasn't booing Jon, because they knew he was right.

5. The GWU student newspaper reported that
during commercials and after the show, it was really,really, really testy. Tucker really didn't like that 30 minutes at all.

9. Thanks for the insider info
Tucker was laughing but I could see in his eyes he wasn't at all amused.

Welcome aboard, Misskittycat.

19. I'm an alumna, and I get an online version,
and I get the online version e-mailed to me twice a week. I don't know if outsiders can subscribe, but I don't see why not. Go to the George Washington University webiste; the student newspaper is "The Hatchet."

Stewart blasts hosts in "Crossfire" appearance
By Ryan Holeywell
Published: Monday, October 18, 2004

<snip>

"What you do is not honest. What you do is partisan hackery," Stewart said. "You have a responsibility to the public discourse, and you fail miserably."

<snip>

Heather Clapp, the show's coordinating producer, said a packed audience of 250 people - most of them students, parents and alumni who reserved tickets in advance for Colonials Weekend - attended the live show.

<snip>

During commercial breaks and after the show, Stewart could be seen arguing with the hosts. Once the show ended, Carlson told some audience members that Friday's show was the "most uncomfortable 30 minutes" in television history.

Carlson, the show's conservative host, seemed nervous as he repeatedly tried to redirect the conversation from criticism of "Crossfire." He criticized Stewart for being Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's "butt boy" and not asking tougher questions when the Massachusetts senator appeared on "The Daily Show."

<snip>

Carlson also urged Stewart to stop lecturing and "be funny."

"I'm not going to be your monkey," Stewart said before he told Carlson he was wasting an "opportunity" to hold politicians accountable when they appear on "Crossfire."

The attacks turned more personal toward the end of the interview between Carlson and Stewart.

Carlson said to Stewart on his performance, "I do think you're more fun on your show," referring to the Emmy-award winning "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central. Stewart replied, "You're as big a dick on your show as you are on any show."

7. They were surprised
I think both Begala and Carlson were surprised at Stewart's offensive. They and their program deserve it, and it's about time they themselves were in the "hot seat".

8. the entire media deserves it
they all need to be fired and we need to start over with the media.

Set some groundrules. Let us have some laws so we can sue them for malpractice.

They have a responsibility.

Most people with responsibility, you can sue them.

12. And your point about the steaming bag of Spin Shit,
is why I don't watch Crossfire anymore, except that I did on the day Jon appeared because of the heads up on DU. I wasn't disappointed.

14. I haven't watched Crossfire in years, literally.
But Jon will never be back, even if that got them ratings. Their two "conservative" regulars are Tucker "Dick" Carlson and Robert "Douchebag for Freedom" Novack.

Not exactly Stewart-friendly hosts.

Tucker deserved what he got but I think Novak deserves it more than Tucker.

18. Jon's right. Crossfire is nothing more than a "steaming bag of spin shit"
I read the transcript, and Jon was masterful. He hit so many of the points that he makes in all of his interviews.

Crossfire (and the multitude of cable nooze shows like it) are a terrible disservice to the democratic process in this country. Rather than discussing issues in depth, they reduce everything to a shouting match between two "sides" that everyone is then supposed to pick from. Therefore, the conversation is only about what the party hacks want to talk about, and the vast majority of people (who have very REAL problems that the hacks won't discuss) are left out in the cold.

Oh, and Jon was right about Tucker -- he IS a dick.
