Gop trying to move polling places (African American) in Philly
GOP in Philly: Block the Vote
"It's predominantly, 100 percent black. I'm just not going in there to get a knife in my back."

-- Matt Robb, Republican ward leader in South Philadelphia, on his last-minute request to move five Philly polling places in African-American neighborhoods.

Pennsylvania and its 21 electoral votes are the second-biggest "battleground" prize after Florida. John Kerry can't win here without a huge turnout in Philadelphia, especially in black neighborhoods that vote 90 percent Democratic. As a result, it's the first place you'd expect a GOP voter suppression effort.

And now it's here.

Chris Brennan (with a big assist from Dave Davies) has the scoop in today's Philadelphia Daily News. They learned that high-ranking state GOP and Bush operatives asked local Republicans to try to move 63 polling places at the last minute. Some 53 of the 63 polling places are in districts less than 10 percent white.

2. He sounds like such a compassionate man - "a knife in the back."
He should have just used n***** and been done with it.

If he keeps his job through November 2, it will be a miracle.

Also, why weren't the polling places an issue in previous elections? Will anyone have the balls to ask that question?

3. Maybe, you racist,
the African Americans in that district don't want to go into your lilly-white neighborhood and get arrested for voting-while-black.

4. Nothing makes me more ill than voter supression
I would NEVER EVER do this in a Republican neighborhood. NEVER in a million years. These people are truely sick.

6. OMG! and these people are trying to say
the Democrats are disenfranchising voters? These people are the devil incarnate! I DO hope they're being STOPPED from moving the polling places? Bastards. WHY isn't THIS crap on the news instead of the non-stop reporting of the latest Gallup bullshit poll?

7. Check this out
"The black neighborhoods are the ones that do the funny stuff. What are you supposed to do?"

This disgusting comment was made by an African American GOPer. So it's his opinion then that the dark folk can't be trusted to vote on their own, their polling places should be moved into the white neighborhoods so that the massahs can keep an eye on things. :eyes:

I thought it was interesting that the Daily News (a tabloid) broke this story and the Inquirer didn't bother to pick it up. I guess their large suburbanite readership wouldn't be interested in hearing about what's going on in the hood.

8. This is an old tactic for Repukes
They did exactly this in 2000, in states like Tennessee (which, being Al Gore's home state, he should have won).

They close and/or move polling places that have been used for years, and don't quite get around to telling the voters where to go-- except, of course, in the metaphorical sense.

Or, polling places in minority neighborhoods open late, and close early. (N.B. If you're a poll watcher in such a place, note that the law is that anyone who's waiting in line as of the official closing time is still entitled to vote.)

11. To what depths will Repubs not stoop
Edited on Mon Oct-18-04 02:36 PM by Raiden
And just how can they get away with this BULLSHIT?! I love it whenever I see Repubs trying to court the AA vote. "Democrats haven't earned your vote!" and all that jazz. At least Democrats will let you vote!
