Canada "urged" to stop on-line sales to the United States (reuters)
TORONTO, Oct 18 (Reuters) - The Canadian government must
stop the online sale of drugs to U.S. customers before it leads
to a severe shortage north of the border, a coalition of health
lobby groups said on Monday.

With many drugs meant for Canadians being sold to U.S.
citizens, who are looking north of the border for a source of
lower-priced medicines, many large pharmaceutical companies
have cut back their shipments to Canada, leaving many Canadians
without much-needed drugs, they said.

"Cross-border Internet pharmacies are not the solution,
short or long term, to the problem of high drug costs in the
United States," Louise Binder, chairwoman of the Canadian
Treatment Action Council, a Toronto-based health-policy group,
told reporters in Toronto.

"We have Senator Kerry and President Bush suggesting
Canada's drug supply is a solution to their problem of higher
U.S. prescription drug pricing. Put simply, they are talking
about raiding our medicine cabinet," said Binder.

The groups also raised concern about the safety of buying
pharmaceuticals through the Internet, noting that some drugs
sold online come by way of countries whose manufacturing and
storage practices might be suspect.

"They might in fact be buying drugs that do not meet safety
and production standards," said Jeff Posten, of the Canadian
Pharmacists Association.

2. Link: Why isn't this called extortion?
Edited on Mon Oct-18-04 02:54 PM by Festivito
There are two persons each with a gun pointed at them and a gun company official is threatening to shoot both of them with the guns unless one of them pays them more money. now tell me that is not extortion.

I wonder if the drug companies will risk health of Canadians in order to keep high prices in the U.S.
