"Like millions of other Americans I had never heard of W. Leon Smith or the Lone Star Iconoclast in Crawford, Texas until a few days ago. I discovered the story as I did my daily Google search of the internet for the key words, “Social Security trust fund.” If the Iconoclast had endorsed Kerry without giving any reasons, the anger on the part of local Bush supporters might be more understandable.
But W. Leon Smith wrote a thoughtful editorial detailing the reasons for not endorsing Bush. My expertise is in the fields of economics and Social Security so I will restrict my defense of the Iconoclast to those areas, although I personally agree with every word of the editorial. Of the many stories I have seen in various papers, it appears that referring to Bush as having a hidden agenda and emptying the Social Security trust fund are among those statements that most enrage the Bush people. But both charges are absolutely true. Bush did have a hidden agenda that he did not reveal to the public before he was elected, and he has emptied the Social Security trust fund. Sometimes the truth really hurts, but this truth hurts not only Bush supporters. It hurts every American and the future of this great nation."
