Denmark causes international chill by claiming North Pole
Denmark causes international chill by claiming North Pole

Denmark has launched an extraordinary bid for ownership of the North Pole, one of the world's last untapped sources of oil and natural gas.

In recent decades the remote polar region has largely been left to a few explorers and tourists. Now, however, the effects of climate change have dramatically raised the stakes.

<snip>

"Climate changes indicate that ice in the polar sea may disappear within 50 to 100 years. That will open up the North-west Passage as a new and valuable shipping route.

"It will also be opened up to fishing and then there are the oil and gas reserves which may well prove significant. Who knows how valuable the rights to the North Pole could be 100 years from now?"

7. Back off Denmark. It's ours.
If you're not careful, we'll come after you with our extra nifty subs.

Proof of ownership.

Santa Claus lives in the North Pole. Santa's postal code is H0H 0H0, which is Canadian. Therefore, the North Pole is in Canada. Case closed.

5. Its kind of disturbing...
...that people are looking at the the melting of the ice cap as a business opportunity instead of a global catastrophe.

Though I do have quite a bit of Danish blood in me, so I guess if anyone is claiming it, I should be glad its the Danes. ;)
