Government proposes training of makeshift spies
Clark is upset about the government’s idea to set up a nationwide network of spies. The Feds are considering using meter readers, cable installers, EMTs, doormen and anyone else who enters your home to spy on us. The concept is to train these people as spies so that they can detect anything unusual in our homes and stop an attack before it happens. This isn’t the first time this has come up. The government was encouraging citizens to spy on other people with the TIPS program. And Clark thought it was a ridiculous idea then. It’s not to say that we shouldn’t try to prevent terrorist attacks. We live in a dangerous time, and we need to watch and watch out for our fellow citizens. But it’s even more dangerous to deputize an army of spies is an invasion of privacy and could potentially put innocent people at harm. As citizens of this country, we are likely to report anything unusual that would put our fellow citizens or ourselves in danger. What the government is proposing with this latest idea is not consistent with a free society.
