Social Security Gets 2.7 Percent Boost

By MARTIN CRUTSINGER, AP Economics Writer

WASHINGTON - More than 47 million Americans receiving Social Security (news - web sites) will get a 2.7 percent increase — an extra $25, on average — in their monthly checks next year, but much of the increase will be eaten up by higher Medicare premiums.

The Social Security Administration (news - web sites) announced the cost-of-living adjustment Tuesday, and the increase will start showing up in checks in January.

1. bush* will use the total dollar amount in stump speeches: 'We gave seniors
X amount of dollars just the other day!' And he will act like it was some great thing. Won't talk miserly percentages, Medicare increases or the real inflation rate (the real cost of living increases).

I suppose Grandma Millie will just waste her new found wealth on payments trying to whittle down that power bill debt from ENRON from a few years back....

2. Alan Greenspan said Social Sec cost of living increases should be cut
I heard Greenspan recently suggesting reducing the cost of living increases in order keep Social Security solvent (now that budget deficits are so huge)

The cost of living increases do not even cover the increases in medical costs, let alone any other living expenses such as heating fuel and groceries.

4. Last year
I couldn't find out what the cola was until December, this being an election year, they've bumped the ammount and got the info out before the election.
It won't help either the w* incomps or people like myself, the money is gone allready, and anyone with a tenth of a brain can see that it's an election year bribe.
