Neighbor caught a freeper last night stealing his Kerry sign!!!
Every morning I take my cup of coffee and walk out in my robe to get the paper. Usually my neigbor will be outside doing something and I'll walk over and talk for awhile. This morning he described what happened last night and I couldn't stop laughing!

Apparently Bill (my neighbors name) had set a trap for some freeper who had stolen his previous Kerry sign. Get this. He rigged up a motion sensor under the sign that tripped a garden sprinkler and VERY loud alarm and spotlight! About 11pm last night some freeper came and fell for it! Even worse the freeper was a guy who lives a few houses down from us so his embarassment will endure forever!! Bill came running outside and snapped a picture of the guy running down the road, dripping wet! I literally spit out my coffee as Bill described the scene! Apparently the guy got about a foot from the sign and set off the motion sensor, tripping the water sprinkler which unloaded on his ass! Once Bill gets the photos developed I will ask to scan the pics and post them here!

Now every time I see the freeper in his yard or in public I will openly laugh at him and call him a sign theif!! The humiliation for him must be unbearable this morning!!!

10. That's not my call..not my yard. Bill appears justified, however!
I think the embarassment the freeper must feel for the rest of his life every time Bill and I look at him is punishment enough! I mean, this guy is a family guy with kids and a career. Why the hell should he be out pulling childish crap like that?!

19. I don't think embarassment will stop freepers. There has been a rash
of sign steeling and what will stop it if is freepers think they'll actually have to do time or get a criminal record in defense of an administration that doesn't give a shit about them.

12. Police, hell! Call the newspapers and TV stations!
This is the kind of oddball stuff they always look for for filler.

My mother always said you knew what a person was worth by what they tried to steal from you. Really stick it to this Freeper, and let the whole town know what he's worth.

16. Very simple really...I was amazed.
You know the security lights that go off when you get near them? He simply rigged one of those up to a switch that activated the garden sprinkler, like the ones that automatically turn on daily on golf courses and in front of banks. Very simple really. Ingenious! All powered by an extension cord he ran to his home. The alarm was your basic electric horn, again tripped by the security lights. He spliced the security lights into a simple switch mechanism that set the whole thing off.

34. real simple
what the above poster said, just a common motion detector light. you can get some with a remote motion sensor, you put the sensor very close to the sign, with a fairly small motion range, because of the fury you will be unleashing, you don't want it going off all the time. with very basic wiring skills, learn them off the internet if you don't know, you can wire a plug to the light unit, then use a light socket to electrical plug adaptor, now you can plug whatever appliance you want into the motion detector. even, say a camera.

How many other signs are in that guys garage?
I would ask other neighbors if they have had signs removed. It is unlikely that the thief can just put them out with his garbage so he probably still has them. If he has enough of them to be worth more $1000 -- that's a felony.

33. Maybe your neighor SHOULD call the police
At first I thought, "The punishment fit the crime." But if he were to let it go at that, wouldn't it be one of those "mixed signals" that Bush accuses Kerry of sending? Does the GOP not constantly accusing us liberal/Dem types of being weak, indecisive and unforvgiving? Here's a brilliant opportunity to show that we can be just as hard-nosed and course-staying as THEY are--THROW THE BOOK AT HIM!!!

44. If this freeper caught someone - He's call the cops
and prosecute.

He deserves the same. Maybe he'll have to move.

Option1: when you get the pics, blow them up and post a:

Have you seen this person? sign. He'll move.

Right now he's so worried he's going to jail he probably can't move.

Option 2: Call the police for another reason (neighborhood watch), he'll see them at your house and assume they're coming for him.

Option 3: Send him a neghborhood watch pamphlet, because you're worried about all the sign stealing lately.

I've been having trouble with my signs being stolen, too. WE're in Colorado, and they are taking our Salazar sign (senate, against the beerman) and oddly, the first time our signs were stolen, they left our Kerry sign. But then that starting leaving the yard on 2 legs also. SoOOo, we are taking our signs in at night.

I HAVE GOT TO FIND A WAY TO RIG IT! Cuz hearing your story just made mine a whole lot more tolerable to deal with. Just the thought of someone getting sprayed like that (including pics) is GREAT!

Thanks for the laugh

For sign pilferer, politicians aren't only ones falling flat on their face
By Lynn Bartels, Rocky Mountain News
October 19, 2004

A Lakewood Republican stealing campaign signs late one night got nabbed when he ran across a low- hanging driveway chain, fell face first onto a pilfered sign and the concrete and knocked himself unconscious.

Randal Wagner, 50, was loaded into an ambulance, treated at Lutheran Medical Center for abrasions and facial cuts and issued a summons.

Wagner, who unsuccessfully tried to steal a "Dave Thomas" congressional sign that evening, had signs for other Democratic candidates in his Toyota pickup, Wheat Ridge police reported.

"I did a very stupid thing," Wagner said Monday, admitting theft of the signs. "I got caught up in the political passions of this highly contested election."

Wagner said that he and his wife, Jan, who was driving their pickup that night, "want to apologize to the people" they have offended.

"Everybody has a right to express their political opinions," Randal Wagner said.

Jan Wagner, who was not cited, said she did not want to discuss what happened. She also is a Republican.

The incident with the Wagners comes at a time when a record number of Democrats and Republicans are complaining that their signs are disappearing or being vandalized.

Wheat Ridge resident Pete Klammer, whose 911 call last Wednesday eventually led police to the Wagners, said his frustration is that people mistakenly believe only their party is the victim.

He said a Republican neighbor who lost two yard signs insisted, "It's not happening to Democrats."

Klammer said that late last Wednesday, shortly after the last presidential debate had ended, his wife heard a noise outside.

Klammer said when he walked outside with his cell phone, he saw a pickup parked at the curb and someone using a box-cutter to try to take the "Dave Thomas" sign he had bolted to his fence, clearly on his property.

Thomas is the Democratic candidate in the 7th District. Klammer said an earlier Thomas sign had been vandalized.

Klammer said he and the stranger tussled over the sign. As Klammer relayed the plate number on the pickup to police, he said the man hopped into the passenger side and the pickup fled west on West 32nd Avenue past Simms Street.

Police said the pickup was registered to Jan and Randal Wagner, but they were not home.

Later that night, the officer heard Jan Wagner's name on the police radio and investigated. It turns out that other officers had discovered a man, identified as Randal Wagner, down in front of an office building at West 42nd and Kipling streets.

Police said Randal Wagner had been stealing a campaign sign that promotes the Jefferson County school district's tax and bond election when he fell and hurt himself.

Police said Jan Wagner was parked across the street and had about two dozen campaign signs in the pickup. They include signs for U.S. Senate candidate Ken Salazar and district attorney candidate Mary Malatesta.

"Jan said she and her husband have never done anything like this (taking signs) before," according to the police report.

So his humiliation can be national.

And the police should be called. He did commit a crime, and it is a serious matter, even though we are laughing at the image. There's no reason he should be above the law.
