No Draft? The SS sent my son a postcard today!
I imagine this is SOP, but it sure gave me the shivers to see it in the mail...a postcard/return mailer from the Selective Service, telling him they noticed his name isn't showing up on their list...so he'd better fill out the card and mail it in or suffer the consequences (he is 19).

Shit.

1. Have him sign up. They're forgiving about lateness during times...
where there is not a draft.

It is the times when there is a draft that they suspect people of more than just forgetting and start punishing people

2. My youngest got one too.
He put it off for as long as he could. They are on top of it, that is certain. All info I had read said that the chances of them noticing was slim. Hmmm, they threatened him with a large fine or jail time. He finally did it and wrote all the CO stuff on it even though it seems that will do no good anymore. They don't seem to be missing anything these days.

3. Do ALL 18 yr olds have to register for the SS?
My youngest is 34, and both of them had to register, but that was a long time ago.

If they still do have to register, is it only males as it used to be, or is it ALL 18 year olds?

5. My husband got one a couple years ago and
at the time he was about 30 or 31 and had been in the MILITARY for about SEVEN YEARS. He registered back at age 18, too. I'm surprised they caught it (your son).

6. probably SOP
It is a felony to not register.

But, still, I'd be uneasy with a deaft-age son, too.

8. I thought they canceled
the post card thing in the 80's.....if they are still doing it and are sending out card now, that can only stand to remind youngsters of the possibilities....
