Exactly. I can't for the world understand why people, instead of useing their time and energy to try and improve themselves, instead have to walk around and wate that time and energy to hate other people. Imagine if everyone, in the world, would spend 1 hour being compassionate every day instead of 1 hour to hate, I reckon the world would be a much more pleasant place.

There is a vast difference in saying "I love you" instead of "I hate you". You need only change one little word, but the result is miles wide.

Fred is a sociopath, and he terrorized and indoctrinated his family to follow in his footsteps. Since his church is mostly comprised of family, and the services are not open to the general public, I'm not sure why they're allowed tax-exempt status.

It's tempting to look at them as a joke. They're just too over-the-top for belief. But seeing Fred's grandchildren standing on the street corners with "Death to Fags" signs still makes me feel sick.

13. You ought to read the bio of Phelps son, he escaped the lunacy...

I don't know what the link is, but a google search should bring it up. Anyway, two of Phelps adult children spilled the beans on this horrible man and his psychotic life. He viciously abused his children and wife throughout much of his life, but at one point realized that he would lose them all, including the grandchildren, which pretty much makes up the congregation of his "church". So in order to vent his sociopathic rage somewhere, he chose homosexuals. He was a drug addict, has been disbarred, nationally I think, and has almost no contact with the outside world besides his ridiculous protests.

It's a very very bizarre and sad story.

I did read that someone, somewhere dressed only in a speedo, held up a giant sign next to Phelps at some protest saying something like "this man enjoys gay sex but can't admit it", and Phelps kept moving away, but the guy just kept moving with him. Hilarious stuff.

and his homophobia is basically just a function of a broader pathology. He could have just as easily become obsessed with hating blacks, Jews, women, Catholics (as did Jack Chick), rap music, horror movies, or for that matter, yes, figs or shrimp.

Do a search on the Internet for "addicted to hate," and you'll find an expose on Rev. Phelps that was written by a local journalist but never published out of fear of a lawsuit. If it's even remotely true, Rev. Phelps has far bigger problems than "just" being homophobic, and his biggest victims haven't been gays but his own family.

15. The church I sometimes go to is a predominately gay and lesbian

church. About twice a year Phelps and his gang come down to protest and it never fails that one or two make it into the church and try to disrupt the service. In Texas it is illegal to disrupt a worship service so they are promptly escorted out by security and held until the police arrive. After this happened a couple of times I truly worried about my safety. I know what these people are capable of and if they can bomb an abortion clinic or a gay bar they can certainly do the same to a church and I wouldn't put it past them to do it.
