I decided to wander into a local video store today to see if I could rent this. To my dismay, there were plenty of copies available, but then again it was on the "guaranteed to be in stock" list, so there were over a hundred copies ... and this was in an area with two Blockbusters and a Hollywood Video within 3 miles of each other. I'm guessing maybe half were available.
Anyway, when I checked out, the clerk opened the case, took out the DVD, and visually scanned the back of it. I've long wished they'd do this because DVD rentals tend to get damaged a lot, and there's nothing more irritating than forgetting to do this myself, getting home, and having an unwatchable movie. But, I'd never seen them do this, so I asked what prompted the apparent change in policy.
The clerk told me over the weekend, they rented out nearly all their copies, and about half of them were returned the next day. They didn't initially think much of this because they have a promotion that gives you a credit on your next rental for turning in new releases within 24 hours. But, when those DVD's started being rented out again, many of them were being returned as damaged ... deep, deliberate scratches, etc. So, they're checking now to make sure they're not damaged, and if they find one that is, they are looking up the rental history. They're trying to make a list to see if they can prove intent.
After a bit of conversation, I determined the girl was a hard-core Kerry supporter, and she was ticked. Same for the store manager, according to her.
I hope a few freeper types end up with a large charge on their bill for damaging the DVD's.
