I'm preparing myself for when my son may get drafted |
|
This is quite difficult. He is 17 and has a bright future. He holds dual citizenship with the US and the EU. He was born here.
Shouldn't he remain and fight to get our democracy back, in the event that bush and the thugs retain power?
As his father, should I not send him away?
Should it ultimately be his decision or mine (until he's 18)?

1. Buy him a plane ticket. |
|
Encourage him to enroll in a European university.
Don't sacrifice your child to and illegal war or have him kill others.

2. I wouldn't want him to fight in this bushit war |

but I would want him to fight against the forces that have hijacked his future. Ultimately, our children have to fight for what's theirs.

Is not what he needs to be to fight the fight you're talking about.

4. You are very fortunate that he has dual citizenship. |
|
Send him out of the country. A draft for the war in Iraq is an unjust cause. You son (and my son...also 17) shouldn't be sacrificed by Bush and Company.

3. I have a 14 year old daugther |

I am terrified she will be drafted. I will fight like hell to create options for her to prevent this from happening. Ultimately after age 18 there is nothing you can legally do to stop them from choosing to go.

6. His decision even before he's 18. |

If he's a conscientious objector he should stay here and stand up for his rights and help change the paradigm by being present instead of leaving the country. Things change slower if the people who hold convictions flee the field. It must be emotionally difficult, I'm sure. I don't want to minimize that. I was a conscientious objector and stayed here. I would never have considered leaving. It was my duty.

my son is dual Canadian/American. He is on the first flight out. I watched my generation, the ones that did not perish, come back haunted by the experience, including my father. Let Congress go. They're so gung-ho.
