Commodity costs spark Whirlpool revision
Lowers 2004 profit forecast, sets plans for price hikes
By Ciara Linnane, CBS.MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 10:01 AM ET Oct. 20, 2004

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - Shares of Whirlpool Corp. hit a 17-month low Wednesday after the company cut its 2004 earnings outlook Wednesday and said it would raise prices of its appliances as the company struggles to combat spiraling costs of raw materials like steel and oil.

Benton Harbor, Mich.-based Whirlpool (WHR: news, chart, profile) said it plans to raise prices for its goods by 5 percent to 10 percent in most key markets around the world, including the U.S., and to take measures to boost productivity.

1. I believe we're entering a highly inflationary period right now
Interest rates rising , price of oil skyrocketing (and that affects not just your personal fuel costs, but the price of everything you buy which has to be freighted, which is damn near everything).

Look at what has happened to just the price of milk and dairy products alone in the last few months.

I wonder why the liberal media isn't talking about this. I wonder why the nation's economists (government as well as private-sector) are silent about this.

2. becuase it points out the fraud played on seniors with a 2.7% rise
in soc sec...when inlfation is MUCH higher.

The news is very quiet ... it could spark a serious conversation.

4. The price of oil influences construction costs
so a leading indicator is new housing starts. If they start to nosedive (and there are so many variables working against them) then you'll begin to hear the truth being told.

There are so many economic storm clouds on the horizon it's difficult to find a place to start talking about them.

If interest rates keep rising, for example, the interest on consumer debt rises, and that puts more of a squeeze on the middle class (which is carrying too much debt already) and that triggers more defaults, which puts more upward pressure on rates...

5. I am much happier seeing rising prices than moving out of US.
I suspect Maytag experienced a similar increase in RM and Transp costs, but chose to move it's operations to Mexico instead of increasing it's prices.

It obviously depends on how much the increase is, but I know I have been looking for a new over the range microwave, and I refuse to even consider a Maytag because of their decision! I'll pay another $20 or $30 for a brand that keeps it's operations here!

6. Please let them know that at Corporate HQ

One vote at a time, one day at a time, we're going to take our country back.

7. Well, I just sent Maytag an email. I had been thinking about doing
it, but you made me decide to do it today. I know my one letter won't matter to them, but hopefully they will receive others with a similar message...not that they'll give a sh*t about it then either.

10. Remember the term Stagflation?
Haven't see that since Nixon left Carter with a mess. At least Nixon got us out of a war.
