Does anyone have a quote from ANY republican: there could be a draft?
Has any repug politicial said there could/should be a draft? I have all kinds of evidence pointing to the likelyhood, but I am wondering if there are any direct quotes.

2. HR 3598 is already in committee. Watch for it. Rep. Nick Smith (R MI)
HR 3598 was introduced in 2001 and referred to committee, where it lies in wait for resurrection if Bush* steals another term.

Here's an excellent analysis of the bill:

3. A Republican senator CALLED for renewed draft

Republican senator: Bring back the draft
Nebraska's Chuck Hagel says 'all of our citizens' should 'pay some price' for U.S. Iraqi operation

A Republican U.S. senator is calling for a return of the military draft so the cost of the Iraq operation could be borne by people of all economic strata.

Speaking at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on post-occupation Iraq, Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., said, "There's not an American ... that doesn't understand what we are engaged in today and what the prospects are for the future."
...
Last fall, media reported on the fact the Selective Service System had posted a notice saying the agency was looking for people to serve on local draft boards. Since then, the appeal has been changed to assure the public that "there is NO connection between this ongoing, routine public outreach to compensate for natural board attrition and current international events. Both the president and the secretary of defense have stated on several occasions that a draft is not needed for the war on terrorism, including Iraq."

Iraq crisis spurs call for US military draft
22 April 2004

...
While denying that they are even considering a revival of the draft, the Bush administration and the military have been conducting a low-profile recruitment campaign in recent months to staff the country’s Selective Service boards with more than 10,000 volunteers. If the draft were reinstated, these boards would have the authority to accept or reject appeals by young men seeking deferments from military service.

5. There will not be a draft
Republicans will not send their children to Iraq, so they wouldn't ever support a true lottery type draft. They can't. They don't believe in the war and don't want their hypocrisy outed.

6. And this means no way can be found to protect little Johnnie's
pasty white ass?

Is that really all that unlikely? Certainly they wouldn't call it the "minorities to the front" bill but so what? No Senator or Congresscritter or rich person of either party is ever likely to see his kids "drafted" into a combat role.

If there is a draft, and if Bush is elected there WILL be a draft, parts of the various Guard commands will once again become safe havens for the privileged, just as they were in the VietNam War.

You really have to stop beleiving that these people give a rats ass what the general voting public think. Bozo the Chimp still has 47+% of the vote, even after four disastrous years of failure and blunders. Why should anybody take them seriously?

7. You missed my point
Edited on Wed Oct-20-04 11:12 AM by Robbie67
If Republicans advocate a draft, there will be HEAVY scrutiny on who's picked. If the media is looking at every draftee, they can't weasel their way out of service. Republicans know that, and they know they won't allow their kids to die over a war that they cannot justify to themselves. It's not going to happen.

On that same tokem, should Bush be elected to his first term, he's going to be in big trouble, because no one will volunteer for service.

9. Do you really think there'd be close scrutiny of who's drafted?
Edited on Wed Oct-20-04 11:39 AM by Cat Atomic
Our media didn't even scrutinize the administration's (constantly shifting) excuses for invading Iraq in the first place. You've got alot more faith in our conglomerate-owned media than I do, my friend.

14. Not faith in media, per se
The media is kinda bound to overall truth. They can't flat out lie, which is why it's such a deceptive bias that most people don't see.

If there's a draft the media can't avoid it. You can't have a draft and not be talking about it on a national stage. I know the people who protest the draft will force the media into much closer scrutiny, which will in turn mean that people will be looking at the draft lottery and making sure everyone who is picked serves. It would be up to us, really, to keep the media honest (well, as honest as we can make them.)

I think, at that point, we'll find that the large majority of Americans would never approve of a draft without much closer inspection of why it's necessary. Republicans don't want to lose, so they're not going to do something that would decapitate their efforts.

10. there is a DOD document out there somewhere
where rumsfeld is discussing bringing about the draft. I had a printed copy but gave it to a lady who has a son of draft age. I didn't think to save a copy on my computer.

12. some info about that here...
"Although Congress would have to approve new legislation to create a Skills Draft or reinstate the combat draft, Family Circle reported in its July 13 issue that Karl Rove had polled GOP members of Congress in September 2002 to see if they would support the President if he requests reinstatement. The Republicans said they would vote for the draft. They would likely support the new legislation needed to create the Skills Draft. While Bush and the Republicans are of course keeping the return of the draft and the new skills draft as quiet as possible, many anti-draft organizations have recently begun warning of a "Coming New Draft."

The Issue Paper document was revealed through the Freedom of Information Act by Seattle Post Intelligencer reporter Eric Rosenberg, who wrote a partial explanation of it that was printed May 1, 2004.

Rosenberg's article was edited, however, and some key points about this document were omitted in the published article. What follows is a full explanation of the document.

This document is real, having been acknowledged by the DoD and the SSS when they said no action is being taken on it at the present time. However, given the current manpower shortages for certain skills and nurses, if Bush gets back in, expect all the options outlined in the Issue Paper to be implemented by the end of December of this year, and at the least a non-combat skills and medical draft to start next year, if not the male combat draft, ages 18–25."

13. oh and one of the other verifiable facts that a draft is coming is
that all local draft boards have been staffed or are in the process of being staffed.

11. Bush is a liar. Remember that.
He tells boldface lies without the slightest inkling of conscience slipping in. He's lied about bigger things, like threats from WMD and 9/11...what makes you think he's suddenly standing up there getting the religion of truth? He'll lie, because it will help him to lie. Period. That is as deep as his thinking goes.

17. Don't forget Not Child Left Behind. Seems deep inside the 600
pages is a requirement for the schools to give the government the names, addresses, and phone numbers of their students so they can try to recruit them. When you consider this was passed before 9-11 you really have to wonder.
