Italian hostages were mercenaries for the U.S.
As per La Repubblica (front page news at www.repubblica.it) today Oct. 22, 2004.

TRANSL: Mercenaries at the service of the United States. These were the fomer Italian hostages held in Iraq for 56 days this past April 12: Cupertino, Stefio, Agliana and Quattrocchi (who was killed by the kidnappers). This is the conclusion of the Judge of Bari responsible for the preliminary investigations. "They were real participants with the coalition forces and this explains, if not justifies, the attitude the kidnappers had of them."

TRANSL: Examining the role of the Presidium Corporation headquartered in the Seychelles Islands, through which - according to the indictment - Spinelli was recruiting Italians in Sammichele di Bari, the Judge writes that the company is "a center of training and recruitment of mercenaries (or worse, as the choice of headquarters in a fiscal paradise the and relative tranquility it offers may make one think...)." It had already surfaced that Salvatore Stefio was one of the recruiters of Presidium.

TRANSL: In the indictment, the judge adds that the investigations up to now "have allowed us to ascertain that what was once hypothetical was in fact true, immediately after the kidnapping of the four Italians in Iraq, that they were in that country's territory as mercenaries, or at least, as "gorillas" to protect businessmen in that battered country."

TRANSL: Among the witness statements taken by the judge, the most damning deposition was made by Paolo Casti, enlisted since February 2004 in Iraq, who declared that the Italian body guards enlisted by the United States had "the power to stop and check people, and, in case of necessity, to open fire, only as a response to an armed attack."

1. Oh, c'mon!
This is big news in Italy. Basically, it appears that the U.S. and the "coalition of the willing" were/are recruiting mercenaries who don't have to abide to the rules, because they just don't have enough soldiers to fight.

2. It makes sense. If 90% of contractor dollars are being spent
on security, it stands to reason the a significant % of contractors would be mercs.
