* Manchin poll shows presidential candidates in a statistical dead heat

By Tom Searls
Staff writer

West Virginia remains a toss-up state in the presidential election, with the race a statistical dead heat, at least one poll indicates.

In the only poll released in the state, the latest poll conducted for Democrat Joe Manchin’s gubernatorial campaign shows Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry has closed in on President Bush.

The poll, done by Global Strategy Group, showed Bush leading by 47 percent to 45 percent. Two percent favored independent candidate Ralph Nader and 5 percent remained undecided. The poll has a margin of error of 4 percent.

Two national polls, Gallup and Zogby, show the state leaning toward Bush and that it is no longer a battleground state.

“I think it’s still close in this state,” said Robert Rupp, a West Virginia Wesleyan professor, who warned that polls are not going to be as accurate as in previous elections.
