Ann Coulter interviewed: yes, she really is that shrill and stupid

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/feature/-/537452/ref=ed_e4_537452/104-9607798-7334310

Amazon.com: How important is this presidential election in the larger context of the Republic and its history?

Ann Coulter: Insofar as the survival of the Republic is threatened by the election of John Kerry (She returns to this point later. - P.), I'd say 2004 is as big as it gets.

Amazon.com: Is there one standout issue, and why does it make a difference? What are the most crucial issues?

Coulter: I repeat: The survival of the Republic is threatened by the election of John Kerry. (Staying on message, or drunk out of her gourd? You decide. - P.) I'd say that's the big one.

Amazon.com: What are the top five books you'd recommend to become an informed voter? And what can your new book contribute?

Coulter: The Bible, High Crimes and Misdemeanors, Slander, Treason, and How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must). (Yes, she's recommending her books alongside The Bible - maybe even with a straight face. - P.)

Amazon.com: What's the closest parallel from American history to this year's race?

Coulter: 1864. Bush is Lincoln and Kerry is General McClellan--who, I note, was a great military leader. (She then admits both men get her hot, and she totally would've blown them both if she was alive in 1864. - P.)

Amazon.com: What is the most important lesson from President Bush's term so far?

Coulter: Peace through strength is an idea that never goes out of style. Also, some people can’t be negotiated with but have to be crushed; e.g., the Taliban, al Qaeda, possibly North Korea and Iran, Pat Leahy, Carl Levin, Richard Ben-Veniste...(If we can smoke those Democratic evildoer folks of the 9/11 Commission out of their holes, we can bring them to justice. - P.)

Amazon.com: What would a Kerry administration mean?

Coulter: Quite possibly the destruction of the Republic. ("CoulterBot, signing off. I really have to take this call from O'Reilly." - P.)

9. Actually, "Peace through Strength" was championed by. . .
every US President and Congress since the Second World War.

It is beyond imagining that someone would equate this ideal with Adolf Hitler, as his war machine was geared exclusively for the pursuit of war, and quite amusing that another would disdain this thought in the name of Orwell, since his life finished with the embrace of this very concept.

10. I find it "beyond imagining" and "quite amusing"

that you are essentially defending Ann Coulter's reasoning.

I don't think "War is Peace" is too big of a stretch from "Peace through Strength." Both imply a kind of doublespeak. Peace through strength is deterrence, no more or less. True peace does not need to be kept with armed sentries. I don't think championing the Cold War mentality makes a whole lot of sense in the post-Cold War world, personally. But thanks for patronizing me twice in one night.

11. Actually, here is a little more history...
to this expression. It was a concept very much used by Hitler, and many others, including many American Presidents, just as you say. However, it is my belief, that, when coulter employs this phrase, Hitler is the person at the forefront of her mind.

12. I don't think there's
anything wrong with the statement "Peace through Strength", but what Ann seems to be saying is that "Strength" equals "War", and this is not necessarily the case. The current war in Iraq, for example, is symptomatic of massive weakness and general failure in many areas of foreign policy, and a "stronger" country would arguably be able to resolve the situation without resorting to a futile, meat-grinder war. What Ann and her ilk really seem to be saying is "Peace through War", which is exactly as idiotic and Orwellian as it sounds.

In fact the original meaning of Orwell's "War is Peace" is that "war without breeds peace within" - that starting a war with someone else's country can serve to unite your own around a common cause. The current administration seem to be doing OK with the "war without" part, but the "peace within" seems slightly lacking...

3. Lather, Rinse, Repeat
Regardless of who the (D) Candidate would have been, she'd be saying the same thing.

the survival of the Republic is threatened by the election of < fill in blank >

But exactly which Republic is she referring to?

4. I think they spelled it wrong
Ann Coulter meant "Republik."

The Republik of Amerika!

SIEG HEIL!

And I gotta agree with her: John Kerry's election will mean the end of the Republik. Once he's elected, we'll start being a plain old "republic" again.

6. Or maybe she meant the survival of the "Republicans"
Since a Democratic victory would likely mark the beginning of the end for those criminals and traitors.

5. I don't know who AnnThrax is trying to kid...
She is dying for Kerry to be elected. He career has gone down the toilet since Shrubya took office... notice how we never heard anything from her until the election process really got cooking... 4 more years of Shrubya and she wouldn't even qualify for a Jeopardy answer.
