Castro breaks knee, arm in fall [[[VIDEO]]] LOOOL

Television cameras captured the moment the Cuban leader fell
Fidel Castro, Cuba's 78-year-old leader, has fractured a knee and an arm after he tripped and fell at the end of a televised public speech.
The government confirmed the injuries in a statement, adding: "His general health is good, and spirits excellent."

The tumble came at the end of a speech in Santa Clara, and Mr Castro later appeared to say he was "in one piece".

There is frequent speculation on the island about the health of Mr Castro, who fainted at a rally three years ago.

A medical examination on Thursday confirmed Mr Castro had broken his left knee and suffered a hairline fracture on his upper right arm, the Associated Press quoted the official statement as saying.

'Distressed' audience

Mr Castro was sweating profusely as he sought to reassure his supporters shortly after his fall on Wednesday night.

Aides rushed to help Castro
"Please excuse me for having fallen... just so no-one speculates, I may have a fracture in my knee and maybe one in my arm," he said.

"I can speak even if they put me in plaster and I can continue to work," he added.

The Cuban revolutionary leader said he preferred to leave the city in a jeep rather than an ambulance and urged people to continue their programme of events.

Mr Castro had been speaking at the mausoleum where the remains of fellow revolutionary Che Guevara are kept.

He delivered a one-hour speech to mark a graduation of arts instructors.

When he fell, some of those among the audience of 30,000 broke into tears, a Reuters correspondent reports.

26. Why would anyone find that FUNNY? He's an elderly man for one, and a
highly respected statesman for another.

Castro sacrificed everything to tell the US capitalist pigs to fukc off and protect his nation, and he's done so for more than 40 years.

His nation is thriving, in spite of the punishments inflicted on it by the corrupt US capitalists.

A little respect is in order.

6. You are laughing at a man who has outlasted
8 US Presidents while providing healthcare for his entire country and increasing literacy in that country-

Lemme take a wild guess.

You like Bush.

7. You don't have to like Bush to think the living conditions in
Cuba under Castro are deplorable. Bush seems to be wanting us to live like that. Fuck Castro and B*sh both.

9. If the US had opened up Cuba
instead of cutting them off, do you really think Cuba would be as impoverished as it is today?

12. I don't think you can say either way is the correct way
without a crystal ball.

If you open it up you give more money to the Communist party of Cuba, possibly prolonging their rule, possibly raising living standards, but there is no guarantee. If Castro diverted all of the money into military programs instead you could possibly be looking at another north Korea on our southern border paid for by you and me.

If you don't open it up they may be more likely to fall from power when Castro dies. But again, there is no guarantee. Since I do not have a crystal ball I can't say. I just know he is a dick weed for human rights.

34. yeah, like our man Batista was SUCH a friend of the people....
The majority of Cuban people still support their revolution 50 years later. They remember Batista and his thugs. Spare us your indignation-- communism is more often than not a reaction to the worst excesses of capitalist oligarchies and tin pot dictators. Batista bent the entire island of Cuba over and grew rich charging admission to its rape. Castro gave the Cuban people something to be proud of: they've chosen their own destiny for 50 years, and endured U.S. economic sanctions to create a literate, healthy, thriving society. When the U.S. finally has the courage to lift the embargo Cuba will be a model of successful revolutionary government in the western hemisphere. It already is.

33. Name a well off communist country?
Name one with vast resources that has ever done any better under corporatism? People think America is powerful because of our government not because we are rich bastards, go figure.

Most Commie countries turn that way out of abject poverty and governments that do not see to the needs of the people. I would not choose to live as a commie but I don't pretend that communism is the reason these countries are impoverished.

Why do you?

23. Yeah, universal health care and universal higher ed is awful
Edited on Fri Oct-22-04 08:26 AM by Mika
We all know how deplorable universal health care and universal higher ed is. We all know that it takes FORCE to get the populace to agree to good schools and higher ed for themselves and their children, and they have to be FORCED to accept universal high quality health care -birth to death. Its amazing that Castro does all of this singlehandedly.<sarcasm off>

I've been to Cuba many times. Cuba is a beautiful place. Cubans are beautiful people. By and large, the Cuban people love their living revolutionary leader.

Viva Cuba!

Abajo Bush!

10. My buddy broke his kneecap into 4 pieces. They had to remove the smallest
He fell off the roof or a ladder. In surgery, they had to pluck out the tiniest piece of his patella because it had no blood supply and would die off. He was an experienced 50 year old runner. I don't think he will ever be the same.

I empathize with Castro.

There's nothing funny about this. Broken bones for old people can be crippling and potentially fatal. What is it with people getting enjoyment out of seeing other people hurt?

:hi:

Who here has never tripped on, or missed a step on a staircase? I've skinned a few shins and knees in my life.

Its really not a laughing matter when a 78 year old man does so, breaking bones in the process.
