The Coming Post-Election Chaos

By John W. Dean

FindLaw
Friday 22 October 2004

A storm warning of things to come if the vote is as close as expected.
This next presidential election, on November 2, may be followed by post-election chaos unlike any we've ever known.

Look at the swirling, ugly currents currently at work in this conspicuously close race. There is Republicans' history of going negative to win elections. There is Karl Rove's disposition to challenge close elections in post-election brawls. And there is Democrats' (and others) new unwillingness to roll over, as was done in 2000. Finally, look at the fact that a half-dozen lawsuits are in the works in the key states and more are being developed.

This is a climate for trouble. A storm warning is appropriate. In the end, attorneys and legal strategy could prove as important, if not more so, to the outcome of this election as the traditional political strategists and strategy.

Let's go over each factor that spells trouble - and see how they may combine.

A GOP Disposition for Nasty Campaigns

3. great thread
thanks for the heads up.
I just voted yesterday on a new touch screen machine. I would have liked a receipt!

4. A 'receipt' is totally meaningless.
Unless your name is recorded on the vote (which it NEVER should be), the printing of a receipt doesn't prove your vote was counted properly at all. Voting machines need to print the BALLOT which is counted, not receipts.

5. yes I agree
receipt is not the correct term. As I clicked the little lights for Kerry and others I couldn't help but say a little prayer that my votes would be recorded. A copy of the counted ballot would have been nice...

6. not unless it's counted as a ballot
'receipt' is useful though for getting that concept across since must of us are familiar with machines printing paper records - receipts - of our transactions daily :hi:

7. I'm expecting violence
The Freep-types have been going slowly insane for a long time. There have been way too many threats of armed violence for my comfort. I don't know how prolific it will be, but I'll be shocked if we don't hear about at least a few anti-Dem "hate crimes". Expect at least a few small businesses with Kerry signs in the window to get torched.

8. I just heard, a few minutes ago,
Edited on Sun Oct-24-04 03:38 PM by Eloriel
on Fox ('cause it's the only thing "on" on Sat. and Sun. afternoons if I'm interested in news -- if you can call what Fox offers news) --

that 48% of Americans, according to some poll (didn't catch what poll) believe that WHOEVER wins the election will win it illegitimately. That's shocking, and alarming.

Edit: Time Mag. Eleanor Clift is on Fox right now (4:38) talking about it, and how she expects recount battles in a lot of states. here we go, folks.
