Air America surprisingly strong in NYC talk ratings! SEATTLE TOMORROW!!!!!
BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, get ready to YAWN cuz the righties are going to puke out their same, boring, staler-than-9-month-old-bread crap talking points! "OH WELL, YOU SEE, NEW YORK IS A COMMIE PINKO LIBRUL PLACE, SO, OF COURSE IT AM BE DO WELL THERE!" Ok, what about Air America kicking ass in SAN DIEGO, which is FAR from a bastion of left leaning?! "WELL UH, UH,
UH..." Yeah, that's what I thought! Nice try!

-------------------------------

Air America flagship WLIB New York is presenting a serious challenge to talk-radio rivals WABC and WOR. According to the latest Arbitron ratings, WLIB beat WOR and is breathing down the neck of WABC among 25-to 54-year-old listeners.

(Lu Cifer's note: keep in mind that WLIB is only 10,000 watts, while WABC--aka piece of crap--is 50,000 watts and I believe WOR is 50,000 watts also, correct me if I'm wrong please! Also, WLIB's transmitter is in N. Jersey, somewhere just north of Newark, meanwhile WABC and WOR both use the EMPIRE STATE BUILDING!)

"The elections are giving them an added boost in a largely liberal town, they're benefiting from the whole Bush-Kerry thing," said Mark Lefkowitz of the Furman Roth ad agency. In an interview with the New York Post, Lefkowitz added that "WABC has proven that it works in election years and not, it'll be interesting to see what happens to WLIB...after the November election,"

1. Ed Schulz is the best left talker IMHO while i enjoy the Mark & Mark
Morning Sedition show and am a big Al Franken fan over all, Big Eddie knows how to do radio.

Randi gets on my nerves a lot. What was the 35 minute rant last week about the Greg Palast film opening anyway?

I wish Mike Malloy was on in a better time slot

Glad to see the ratings doing well though, it will help them generate ad revenue

6. I have to say
of our line-up here in Portland, Ed Schultz is my least favorite.

I far prefer Morning Sedition, Franken, Janeane & Sam, Mike M.

Ed is "folksy," which is good for hooking in moderates and rural types, but he's a little too folksy for my taste. Plus I don't like the way he went after Randi, calling her "Randi Slut." Also, who gives a crap about football and golf? I guess a lot of people, but -- yuck.

However, like I said, he's a good bridge for moderates.

2. My Best Friend Works Local NPR
station...I told her that Air America would cut into their audience too, because many liberals are disgusted w/ NPR. She can't see that happening and is in denial about NPR being a tad right-wing. I know from my radio daze, you and your co-workers sit in the bubble and think that your station is superior.

So we had this conversation again the other day when Randi announced that AAR is #1 in San Diego 25-54 numbers - The demo every station goes after. San Diego is very conservative town...

Then she says, she's asking people who work at ad agencies and media buyers if they listen to AAR and those folks shrug it off as whacky, etc...and she adds "these are smart people" WELL these "smart" people are are supposed to have their fingers on the pulse of what audiences want, not what they personally think.

I will look forward to the ratings when they come out here and show AAR's 2nd book ratings.

5. They WERE, but the Portland listeners saved it!
I'd have to check my Left Wing Radicals yahoogroup ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LeftWingRadicals/join can you say shameless plug!) for the article, but a few hundred locals came out at a meeting with the station owner, and the dude decided to keep Air America on that Portland ME station! Mad props to y'all up there! And, if people from Florida, like me, are called Floridians...are people from Maine called Mainiacs!

7. Partial correction here
And I'll have to get a little technical to explain this.

WABC's transmitter is also in New Jersey, in Lodi, while WLIB's and WOR's are both located in Lyndhurst, NJ.

AFAIK, no AM stations are located on the Empire State Building, nor would it make sense for them to be there. The signals of AM stations propagate very differently than FM or TV stations. Because of where they are on the radio spectrum, AM signals propagate largely through ground waves, and the best type of transmitter location for them is swampy wetlands, which is why so many AM's in the NYC area have their transmitters in the Jersey Meadowlands.

Also, AM signals tend to bounce off the ionosphere at night and travel hundreds and even thousands of miles, which means it's difficult to place two strong AM's on the same frequency even if they're far apart. In the early days of the FCC, certain stations were designated "clear channels" (not to be confused with the company), which means that at night most other stations on that frequency either have to sign off at sunset, or lower their power, or change to a very directional signal, or a combination of the latter two. Otherwise, you'd have unlistenable interference.

And one final technical aspect of AM: frequencies at the lower end of the dial, toward 540, tend to propagate their signal much more strongly than those at the upper end, toward 1700.

Now what does this mean for the stations in question? Well, WABC and WOR are both clear channel stations, and at night they can be heard throughout much of the country east of the Rockies. And because they're at the lower end of the dial, at 770 and 710 respectively, they have much better propagation through the NYC metro area at all times. When I lived in Philly, I had no trouble picking up a relatively clear signal from these two stations, as well as from WNBC (now WFAN), at any time of the day or night.

WLIB has a much more problematic signal. First, it's located at 1190 and only has 10,000 watts (compared to the other two's 50,000, which is the U.S. maximum). Also, until a few years ago, WLIB either had to sign off at night or reduce its signal substantially (I can't remember which) because there was a clear channel station in Fort Wayne, IN using the same frequency. The owner of WLIB purchased the Fort Wayne station for the specific purpose of lessening its nighttime signal, so that he could have WLIB run 10,000 watts 24/7. It's still nowhere near the equal of WABC or WOR, and its signal in outlying suburban areas, especially at night, tends to be spotty.

FM and TV signals do not rely on ground waves, and their signals are generally propagated only via line of sight to the horizon, which in practical terms means about 60-65 miles. Thus, it makes sense to locate their transmitters on the Empire State Building. So, because NYC and Philly are only 90 miles apart, no station in either city broadcasts on a channel used in the other city. NYC has VHF channels 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13, while Philly has only 3, 6, and 10, with 12 allocated to Wilmington, DE (only 25 miles south of Philly) and 8 to Lancaster, PA (about 55 miles west of Philly).

I still haven't figured out, though, why a couple of FM frequencies have stations located on them in both NYC and Philly. I know that 101.1 is one of the signals (WCBS-FM in NYC and a station in Philly that used to call itself EZ-101), but I forget what the other one is.
